Essential Planning Guide
Vibe & Scenery
Even after the closure of Stok Kangri to climbing, the trek to its base camp remains one of Ladakh's finest high-altitude adventures. Beginning from Stok village, the trail follows barren valleys, glacial streams, and rocky campsites into the heart of Hemis National Park beneath the towering slopes of Stok Kangri.
At approximately 16,300 ft, Base Camp itself sits higher than many famous Alpine summits, providing trekkers with a genuine expedition atmosphere despite the absence of technical climbing.
The combination of extreme altitude, thin air, and exposed terrain makes this trek an excellent acclimatization objective for aspiring mountaineers and experienced trekkers preparing for larger Himalayan expeditions.

Indian nationals must pay the ALTOA and Hemis National Park wildlife fees. Foreign nationals require a Protected Area Permit (PAP). Strict Leave No Trace principles must be followed; the summit closure was enacted precisely because of severe litter and human waste issues on the glacier.

Editor's Notes
5-day route reaching 16,300ft. Covers 26.0km of varied terrain.
→ See full itinerary with altitude profileRated challenging. The terrain is exceptionally dry and dusty. Expect loose scree, rocky trails, and multiple river crossings through freezing glacial meltwater.
→ See difficulty breakdown and fitness guidePackages range from ₹15,000 - ₹25,000. Inclusions and hidden costs vary by operator tier.
→ See full cost breakdownNo. The summit of Stok Kangri has been officially closed by the ALTOA (All Ladakh Tour Operators Association) and local authorities since 2020 to allow the local glacier—Stok village's main water source—to recover from environmental degradation. You can only trek up to the Base Camp.
The trek to Base Camp is rated as Challenging. The daily distances are relatively short, but the altitude gain is brutal. You will sleep at 16,300 ft, which tests the cardiovascular system immensely. It requires excellent physical fitness and prior high-altitude experience.
Absolutely. Leh sits at 11,500 ft. You must spend a minimum of two full days in Leh resting and doing light sightseeing before beginning the trek to allow your body to adjust to the thin air.
Yes, especially on the descent day from Base Camp to Stok Village. You will have to cross the glacial Stok River multiple times. The water is freezing and the current can be strong in the afternoon.
The risk is very high. Ascending to 16,300 ft in just a few days pushes the limits of acclimatization. You must hydrate constantly (4-5 liters a day), ascend slowly, and be prepared to descend immediately if severe symptoms present.
You will have a good network in Leh and patch connectivity in Stok Village. However, from Chang Ma to Base Camp, there is zero mobile connectivity.
For the Base Camp trek during the summer, no technical mountaineering gear (crampons, ice axes, ropes) is required. High-quality trekking gear and poles are sufficient.
The region is home to Blue Sheep (Bharal), Marmots, Golden Eagles, and it is premium Snow Leopard territory, though sightings in summer are exceedingly rare.
