Common Questions

Can I climb to the summit of Stok Kangri?
No. The summit of Stok Kangri has been officially closed by the ALTOA (All Ladakh Tour Operators Association) and local authorities since 2020 to allow the local glacier—Stok village's main water source—to recover from environmental degradation. You can only trek up to the Base Camp.
How difficult is the trek to Base Camp?
The trek to Base Camp is rated as Challenging. The daily distances are relatively short, but the altitude gain is brutal. You will sleep at 16,300 ft, which tests the cardiovascular system immensely. It requires excellent physical fitness and prior high-altitude experience.
Is acclimatization in Leh mandatory?
Absolutely. Leh sits at 11,500 ft. You must spend a minimum of two full days in Leh resting and doing light sightseeing before beginning the trek to allow your body to adjust to the thin air.
Are there river crossings?
Yes, especially on the descent day from Base Camp to Stok Village. You will have to cross the glacial Stok River multiple times. The water is freezing and the current can be strong in the afternoon.
Will I get Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS)?
The risk is very high. Ascending to 16,300 ft in just a few days pushes the limits of acclimatization. You must hydrate constantly (4-5 liters a day), ascend slowly, and be prepared to descend immediately if severe symptoms present.
Is there mobile connectivity on the trail?
You will have a good network in Leh and patch connectivity in Stok Village. However, from Chang Ma to Base Camp, there is zero mobile connectivity.
Do I need special mountaineering gear?
For the Base Camp trek during the summer, no technical mountaineering gear (crampons, ice axes, ropes) is required. High-quality trekking gear and poles are sufficient.
What wildlife might I see in Hemis National Park?
The region is home to Blue Sheep (Bharal), Marmots, Golden Eagles, and it is premium Snow Leopard territory, though sightings in summer are exceedingly rare.
