Since the 2013 floods, the new route is approximately 16–18km long (roughly 22km from the parking). It is a moderate-to-difficult uphill climb that takes 8–10 hours for most pilgrims.
Can I stay overnight at the Kedarnath top?+
Yes, there are GMVN (Government) guest houses and several private 'tented colonies' near the temple. Staying overnight is highly recommended to attend the 'Bhasma Aarti' early in the morning.
What is the IRCTC HeliYatra booking process?+
Tickets for Kedarnath helicopters are sold ONLY through the official IRCTC HeliYatra website. You need your Yatra Registration number to book. Avoid any third-party agents claiming to sell these tickets.
Is there a weight limit for Kedarnath helicopter passengers?+
Yes, a standard limit is 80kg per passenger. If you exceed this, you may have to pay an extra charge per kg. This is strictly enforced for flight safety in high-altitude conditions.
What is the temperature at Kedarnath at night?+
Even in May and June, night temperatures can drop to 0°C or -2°C. Heavy woolens, thermals, and waterproof jackets are mandatory as weather changes in minutes at 11,755 ft.
How do I find a reliable pony or doli at Gaurikund?+
Rates for Ponies and Dolis (Palanquins) are fixed by the local administration and lists are displayed at Gaurikund. Always pay at the official booking counter to get a receipt and avoid being overcharged.
Is drinking water safe during the trek?+
While natural springs are pure, we recommend drinking only boiled or filtered water provided at the 'water booths' set up along the route to avoid stomach issues during the trek.
Can solo travelers join a group for Kedarnath?+

Are there cloakrooms available for luggage at the base?+
Yes, there are official cloakrooms at Sonprayag and Gaurikund where you can safely leave your main suitcases and carry only a small backpack for the overnight stay at the top.
What happens if the Kedarnath temple is closed due to snow?+
During winter (Nov-April), the portal is closed. You can instead perform 'Winter Darshan' at the Omkareshwar Temple in Ukhimath, where the deity is worshipped during the cold months.
