Drive to Burfu

Munsiyari (7,200 ft)Burfu (10,200 ft)

The Gori Ganga gorge drive from Munsiyari is extraordinarily scenic — the road traverses the western wall of the gorge, alternating between forest, cliff face, and waterfall crossings. Register at Lilam (bring Aadhar/Passport copies). Burfu is a small Shauka village at the current road-head — homestay accommodation available.

Key Landmarks

Lilam village and ITBP registration post (ILP/registration stop, 20 min)Bugdiyar gorge narrows (most dramatic cliff section of the Gori Ganga road)Rilkot village (ancient Shauka village, rhododendron arch in spring)Burfu village (road-head, 10,200 ft, homestay available)

Reach Martoli Village

Burfu (10,200 ft)Martoli (11,000 ft)

Short but photogenic approach. The suspension bridge crossing is the symbolic entry to a different world — from the modern BRO road to a 19th-century trading village with no vehicle access. The climb from the bridge to the Martoli plateau takes 1.5-2 hours on a clear path and arrives directly above the mansion cluster. Arrive by noon for afternoon exploration time.

Key Landmarks

Gori Ganga suspension bridge (dramatic bridge over the gorge — the transition from road to hanging valley)Initial zigzag ascent through juniper and birchFirst view of Martoli Himals from the approach trail (the dark slate rooftops against the snow peaks is the classic arrival composition)Nanda Devi East first view from the Martoli plateau rim

Crossing the high-altitude pass bridges two distinct watershed systems, shifting the expedition over the glaciated divide and down into a new river basin.

Today's Objective

🛕 Reach Martoli Village Exploration And Ridge Temple

Martoli (11,000 ft)11,200 ftMartoli (11,000 ft)Load Ferry

The full day is essential — do not attempt to compress Day 3 and Day 4 into a single day. The architectural exploration alone takes 3-4 hours with a knowledgeable guide (the mansion stories interlock with the valley's trade history in ways that require narration). The temple ridge hike (200m gain) should be done in the late afternoon (4:30-6pm) for the sunset alpenglow on Nanda Devi East. The 9am–11am morning window captures the first direct sun on the eastern face of Nanda Devi East.

Key Landmarks

Eastern Himal cluster (finest surviving lakhori doorframes)Central Himal courtyard (the main communal gathering area in front of the three largest mansions)Roman-arch grain store (unusual arched stone structure — debated as a possible 19th-century Italian-influenced design from trader contact)Nanda Devi Temple ridge (11,200 ft) — panoramic sunrise/sunset stationMartoli threshing floor (September–October: active buckwheat and barley threshing)

Departure

Munsiyari (7,200 ft)Kathgodam or Almora

Option to spend the morning in Munsiyari at the Khaliya Top viewpoint (2-hour hike from Munsiyari for Panchchuli and Nanda Devi East views at 10,000 ft) before the afternoon drive to Kathgodam. Strongly recommended to add Khaliya Top as a complementary Munsiyari viewpoint on this rest morning.

Key Landmarks

Munsiyari viewpoint (Panchchuli five-peak panorama)Thal town (midway chai stop)Almora town (optional stop for Kumaoni food and market)Kathgodam railhead

The motorable road navigates deeper into the mountain river corridor, where the landscape transitions from lower foothills into the steep, dense forested valleys.

Trek Extensions & Add-ons

Milam Glacier (3 additional days)

+3 Days

From Martoli, the trail continues 14 km further to the Milam Glacier snout at 12,400 ft — the largest glacier in Kumaon and the source of the Gori Ganga river. Milam village (en route) is another semi-abandoned Shauka trade village of similar architectural character to Martoli but more remote. The glacier snout viewpoint has spectacular close-up views of the Milam Glacier icefall. Requires ILP from Munsiyari for Indian nationals.

Khaliya Top (standalone morning from Munsiyari)

+0 Day

On Day 5 departure morning, the 2-3 hour hike from Munsiyari to Khaliya Top (10,000 ft) provides the complementary southern-face view of Panchchuli and Nanda Devi East — a different perspective to the eastern-face Martoli view. Combine both viewpoints for the complete Nanda Devi East photographic circuit.
