Difficulty & Readiness Guide
An Easy-to-Moderate trek. The forest sections are easy, but the final ascent from Chopta to the 13,100 ft Chandrashila peak is a steep, moderate challenge.
The Question
Preparation Required
Intermediate
Prior Experience
Recommended: 1-2 easy Himalayan treks or regular hiking experience.
Highly technical trek requiring physical and mental preparation.
Route Knowledge
Fast-paced or high-mileage route demanding excellent cardiovascular fitness across a trek featuring loose moraine.
Physiological Demand
Challenging daily distances and steady climbs. Good cardiovascular fitness is required.
Below the major effects of altitude sickness. Air remains relatively dense.
Rolling or gradual terrain with minimal harsh impact on joints.
Comfortable pacing with good recovery options.
Well-defined, stable trails with no technical maneuvers required.
The trail to Rohini Bugyal is a classic forest walk with roots, rocks, and mud. The final ascent to Chandrashila is steep, exposed rock (or deep snow in winter).
Day 5 is grueling. You ascend 3,600 feet in just 5km. The thin air at 13,100 ft makes every step difficult. A pre-dawn start is essential to catch the sunrise and avoid afternoon clouds.
Descending from Chandrashila to Tungnath is notoriously hard on the knees, especially if the trail is icy. Trekking poles are highly recommended.
The altitude gain is perfectly paced. Spending three days between 7,000 ft and 10,800 ft allows the body to fully acclimatize before pushing to 13,100 ft.

Solo Female Travelers
Very safe. The trail (especially Chopta to Tungnath) is heavily trafficked by pilgrims and trekkers alike.
Hazard Profile
Most injuries and failures on this trail can be avoided by making smarter decisions early on.
Wearing standard sports shoes in winter, leading to frostbite or slipping on ice.
Underestimating the Chandrashila summit push because the first few days were 'easy'.
Not carrying sufficient water on the summit day (there is no water past Chopta).
Slipping on ice/snow during the descent from Chandrashila (Winter/Spring)
Acute Mountain Sickness above Tungnath
Extreme wind chill at the summit
AMS (Altitude Sickness)
The rapid ascent from Chopta (9,500 ft) to Chandrashila (13,100 ft) in a few hours can trigger AMS. If headaches persist, descend immediately from Tungnath.
Evacuation Route
If at Rohini Bugyal, evacuate back to Sari or forward to Chopta road. From Chopta, vehicles can quickly transport patients to the Ukhimath hospital.
Solo Trekking
Possible, but highly discouraged in winter due to the risk of getting lost in heavy snow or slipping on the Tungnath trail. The forest between Deoria Tal and Chopta is vast and easy to get lost in without a guide.
Common Trail Ailments

> Chopta is connected by road, making emergency vehicular evacuation to Ukhimath relatively fast compared to deeply isolated treks.
