Difficulty & Readiness Guide
An Easy-to-Moderate trek with a forgiving altitude limit of 10,826 ft. The main physical challenge is navigating the steep, raw forest ascents.
The Question
Preparation Required
Intermediate
Prior Experience
Recommended: 1-2 easy Himalayan treks or regular hiking experience.
Highly technical trek requiring physical and mental preparation.
Route Knowledge
Endurance-focused route with significant physical taxation.
Physiological Demand
Multi-day camping requiring mental toughness to handle weather and fatigue debt.
Comfortable pacing with moderate daily distances.
Rolling or gradual terrain with minimal harsh impact on joints.
Below the major effects of altitude sickness. Air remains relatively dense.
Well-defined, stable trails with no technical maneuvers required.
The trail is a mix of well-trodden village paths and raw, steep forest tracks. The bugyal itself is soft alpine grass, but getting there requires navigating root-heavy, steep dirt trails.
The push from Birmuwa Kothi to Pankhu Top is relatively short (2 km). The real challenge is the Day 3 climb from Jhuni to Birmuwa Kothi.
Descending 3,600 feet over 15 km on Day 5 is exhausting. The steep forest sections can be slippery if it has rained recently.
The altitude gain is steady and stays below 11,000 ft, making it an excellent introductory trek to high-altitude environments without extreme AMS risks.

The Kumaon region is culturally very respectful and safe. However, trekking with a reputed local guide is mandatory due to the absolute isolation of the trail.
Hazard Profile
Most injuries and failures on this trail can be avoided by making smarter decisions early on.
Underestimating the Day 3 incline through the forest.
Not carrying enough warm layers; the wind chill at the exposed bugyal can drop temperatures rapidly.
Expecting commercial tea houses and failing to carry adequate trail snacks.
Muscle cramps and knee strain on the steep forest sections
Hypothermia if improperly geared at the bugyal
Getting lost in the dense forest
AMS (Altitude Sickness)
Low risk due to the maximum altitude of 10,826 ft, but proper hydration is still mandatory.
Evacuation Route
Manual stretcher carry or mule transport down to Tharsali, followed by a vehicle drive to the Bageshwar District Hospital.
Solo Trekking
Highly discouraged. The lack of clear trails, heavy forest cover, and absence of other trekkers make solo navigation dangerous.
Common Trail Ailments

> Evacuation relies entirely on local manpower (stretchers or mules) to get back to the Tharsali roadhead.
