Difficulty & Readiness Guide
An arduous, remote expedition. The trail transitions from steep, humid forests into vast, highly unstable glacial moraine, requiring excellent fitness and balance.
The Question
Preparation Required
Advanced
Prior Experience
Required: At least 2-3 moderate Himalayan treks (above 13,000ft).
Highly technical trek requiring physical and mental preparation.
Route Knowledge
Sustained multi-day trek requiring high cumulative endurance across consecutive days across a trek featuring scrambling and loose moraine.
Physiological Demand
Expect long, exhausting days of sustained climbing at high intensity. Your cardiovascular system will be pushed to its absolute limit.
Deep wilderness isolation and cumulative fatigue. The mental challenge of enduring days on end in harsh conditions is extreme.
Rolling or gradual terrain with minimal harsh impact on joints.
Below the major effects of altitude sickness. Air remains relatively dense.
Well-defined, stable trails with no technical maneuvers required.
The route shifts from dense, humid forests with steep dirt trails to highly unstable glacial moraine and boulder fields above 12,000 ft.
The climb from Tambakund to Masar Tal is a vertical scramble over loose rocks. It demands careful foot placement and balance.
The descent itinerary consolidates the ascent days, resulting in extremely long walking distances (e.g., 25 km from Kharsoli to Reeh).
The ascent is well-paced over 5 days, providing excellent acclimatization before pushing to 13,580 ft at Masar Tal.

Must join an organized, highly professional expedition group. The wilderness isolation is absolute beyond Gangi.
Hazard Profile
Most injuries and failures on this trail can be avoided by making smarter decisions early on.
Wearing lightweight trekking shoes instead of stiff, high-ankle boots. The moraine will destroy soft shoes.
Underestimating the steepness of the initial climb from Ghuttu to Reeh.
Not hiring a local guide, leading to getting lost in the shifting trails near Khatling.
Ankle sprains or fractures on the loose moraine between Tambakund and Masar Tal
Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) at Masar Tal camp
Trail washouts in the gorge between Kharsoli and Tambakund
AMS (Altitude Sickness)
The jump to sleep at Masar Tal (13,580 ft) is significant. If anyone shows severe AMS symptoms at Tambakund (12,000 ft), they must not push up to the lake.
Evacuation Route
Ground evacuation is grueling. A stretcher must be carried down the broken trails to Gangi. Helicopter rescue is possible from Tambakund in clear weather if satellite comms are available.
Solo Trekking
Highly discouraged. The trails past Gangi are frequently destroyed by rockfall, and route-finding requires deep local knowledge.
Common Trail Ailments
