Standard Valley of Flowers approach. Trail is heavily used by Hemkund pilgrims — shared route for all. Pony and helicopter options available for Govindghat–Ghangaria for those needing them. Obtain Valley of Flowers permit and inner zone permit at the Govindghat/Ghangaria Forest Office before proceeding.
Key Landmarks
Staying At
Essential acclimatization day at the meadow level. Walk the full Valley of Flowers (3.5 km each way). Look up throughout — the Dharansi ridge high above the valley's southern wall is visible from the meadow, giving orientation for tomorrow's Hemkund route. In August, this day delivers perhaps the finest wildflower walk in India.
Key Landmarks
Staying At
Critical acclimatization: the Hemkund day-trip to 14,100 ft pre-adapts the body for the Dharansi push to 16,800 ft. Hemkund Sahib is one of the five most sacred Sikh pilgrimage sites globally — the Gurdwara sits at the lakeside with extraordinary Himalayan backdrop. Benefit from the free langar (communal meal) at 14,100 ft — perhaps the highest-altitude communal kitchen in India.
Key Landmarks
Staying At
Leave the Hemkund trail and take the inner zone permit route up the southern rim. This section is the least-trodden part of the route — expect no other trekkers above the boundary gate. Camp in the evening with the Dharansi pass col visible above, and the Valley of Flowers invisible now (behind the ridge below you). Clear night skies for stargazing.
Key Landmarks
Staying At
4am start. Crampons on for the snowfield in June–July. August–September: solid trail but cold and exposed. At the col, take time — look back: the entire Valley of Flowers spread 5,000 ft below in full bloom (August) is the defining image. Look forward: the Bhyundar drainage opens ahead. Nanda Devi, Kamet, Gauri Parbat visible from the col. Descend carefully on the far side — loose rock below the snow line.
Key Landmarks
Staying At
Relaxed full-day descent through the Bhyundar valley — entirely different from the approach side. This is the classic Bhyundar creek trail used by Garhwali shepherd families seasonally. Meet occasional local livestock families. The forest re-entry after open alpine terrain is dramatic.
Key Landmarks
Staying At
Final descent to the Govindghat road. The Bhyundar creek joins the main Alaknanda near Govindghat — the contrast from the pass environment 2 days ago is sharp. Vehicle pickup at Govindghat. Option to continue to Badrinath (22 km upriver) or return toward Joshimath–Rishikesh.
Key Landmarks
Add 2 full days at the Valley of Flowers meadow before starting the Dharansi ascent — dawn and dusk photography sessions in August bloom, capturing the full wildflower diversity. This brings total trek to 9 days.
On exit at Govindghat (Day 7), drive 22 km upriver to Badrinath (10,250 ft) — one of the four Char Dham pilgrimage sites. 2 days at Badrinath temple, Mana village (India's last village), and optional Vasudhara Falls walk.
From the Badrinath extension, push to Satopanth Tal (14,900 ft) — the sacred triangular lake above Badrinath, 2 days above the temple. Adds 4 days to the journey but completes the Badrinath inner sanctuary experience.
