Difficulty & Readiness Guide
A moderate, highly rewarding trek. It requires good stamina for long daily distances and steep ascents but avoids severe technical terrain.
The Question
Preparation Required
Intermediate
Prior Experience
Recommended: 1-2 easy Himalayan treks or regular hiking experience.
Highly technical trek requiring physical and mental preparation.
Route Knowledge
Sustained multi-day trek requiring high cumulative endurance across consecutive days across a trek featuring loose moraine.
Physiological Demand
Multi-day camping requiring mental toughness to handle weather and fatigue debt.
Challenging daily distances and steady climbs. Good cardiovascular fitness is required.
Well-defined, stable trails with no technical maneuvers required.
Rolling or gradual terrain with minimal harsh impact on joints.
Below the major effects of altitude sickness. Air remains relatively dense.
The trail is a mix of well-trodden mud paths, steep boulder ascents, and narrow ridges along the Ruinsara river. The section between Devsu Bugyal and Ruinsara Tal requires careful footing over loose rocks.
Reaching Ruinsara Tal is an endurance push. The altitude crossing 11,000 ft makes the air thin, and the final 3 km approach to the lake feels deceptively long.
The descent from Devsu Bugyal back to Seema is notoriously steep. Trekking poles are essential to prevent patellar tendon strain.
The altitude profile is gradual and well-paced. Spending a night at Seema (8,400 ft) and Devsu (9,840 ft) allows the body to perfectly acclimatize before hitting the 11,480 ft lake.

Wearing poor-quality shoes, leading to rolled ankles on the riverbed rocks.
Underestimating the steepness of the climb to Devsu Bugyal.
Not carrying sufficient layers for the freezing winds at the lake.
Ankle sprains on the boulder-strewn path to Ruinsara
Hypothermia at the lake campsite due to fierce valley winds
Mild Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS)
AMS (Altitude Sickness)
AMS is uncommon due to the gradual ascent profile, but trekkers pushing too hard to the lake without hydration can suffer headaches and nausea.
Evacuation Route
Mule or human stretcher carry down to Taluka, followed by a jeep evac to Sankri. From Sankri, road ambulance to Dehradun.
