Standard Pindari approach Day 1. Beautiful oak-rhododendron forest throughout. Dhakuri camp meadow has first open views of the Nanda Devi range. FRH keeper will have the food menu for dinner — confirm for the night.
Key Landmarks
Staying At
The trail follows the Pindar river valley through a narrow, forested gorge, moving past traditional settlements into increasingly dense Kumaoni agricultural terraces.

Descend to Khati village (excellent stop for local chai and interaction with the Pindari trekking community). Continue along the Pindar river to Dwali. The valley narrows and the first glimpses of the high peaks appear at Dwali in clear conditions.

KEY ACTIONRiver Crossings
Plan to cross early in the day before snowmelt swells the water levels. Unclip backpack waist belts before crossing.
Camp Alt
12,000 ft
Day Gain
+2,220 ft
Significant altitude gain day. The trail above Dwali progressively enters alpine country — treeline ends, views open dramatically. Phurkiya at 12,000 ft: the FRH is the highest formal accommodation on the Pindari side. First full views of the glacier approach from the FRH compound. Acclimatize carefully — tomorrow is Zero Point.
Key Landmarks
Staying At
Tree line disappears as the valley broadens into a spectacular high-altitude alpine meadow basin, replacing the dense forests with expansive grazing pastures.

The famous Pindari glacier viewpoint — a flat walk from Phurkiya to the glacier snout at Zero Point. Crystal-clear view of the full glacier with Nanda Khat, Changuch, and Nanda Devi on the horizon. Return to Phurkiya for lunch. Afternoon rest before the col crossing prep tomorrow.
Key Landmarks
Staying At
Crossing the high-altitude pass bridges two distinct watershed systems, shifting the expedition over the glaciated divide and down into a new river basin.
Field Notes
Use Trekking Poles
Trekking poles are highly recommended to save your knees on the descent.
INFOSlower Progress
Progress will be significantly slower and more taxing on your ankles than trail distance suggests.

Today's Objective
The crossover day — the defining unique section of this circuit. From Phurkiya, the guide leads north on terrain not marked on any commercial map to the interglacier col at 13,200 ft. From the col: the Kafni valley opens ahead — totally different character to Pindari. Descend to the Kafni camp. First sight of Nanda Kot pyramid.
Key Landmarks
Staying At
The route transitions between basins, transitioning from the Pindar basin into the Kafni valley.

The Kafni glacier base camp (13,900 ft) is a dramatically different experience from Pindari Zero Point — wilder, more remote, more exposed, and dominated by the sheer south face of Nanda Kot above the glacier bowl. Photography of the Nanda Kot south face from the glacier terminus is one of the finest mountain photography opportunities in Kumaon. Return to lower camp.
Key Landmarks
Staying At
A scheduled rest day situated in situated entirely within the barren moraine basin.

Camp Alt

Day Gain

Long descent day — 5,683 ft over 18 km. The Kafni gad descent trail is well-used by locals and FRH keepers on the Pindari side. Arrive Khati by late afternoon for a proper village homestay meal — the best food on the entire circuit.
Key Landmarks
Staying At
The moraine basin descends steeply back into the forested river valley.

Final easy descent to Loharkhet/Song by 11am. Drive to Bageshwar for onward connection to Kathgodam or Almora. Circuit complete.
Key Landmarks
The high alpine meadows narrow into forested river terraces as tree line vegetation reappears in the lower mountain river corridor.
From Khati village (after Day 7 return), rest 1 day then begin the Sundardhunga glacier circuit (Trek 153 in this database) — a 5-day approach to the Sukhram glacier base camp. Creates a 15-day Khati triple-glacier expedition: Pindari + Kafni crossover + Sundardhunga. The most comprehensive inner Kumaon glacier experience possible.
Instead of the standard Song-Dhakuri approach on Day 1, use the alternate Dhakuri-Jatoli ridge for the approach (Trek 155 in this database) — arriving at Khati via the Jatoli ridge variant. Adds 1 day but includes the ancient rhododendron forest ridge walk as the circuit opener.
