Essential Planning Guide
Vibe & Scenery
Patangini Dhar is one of Garhwal's lesser-known but highly demanding crossover routes, connecting the dramatic Kedartal basin with the Rudugaira Valley. Unlike conventional out-and-back treks, this expedition crosses a high mountain pass through rugged moraine fields, unstable scree, and exposed alpine terrain.
Throughout the journey, trekkers remain surrounded by some of the most dramatic peaks in Gangotri National Park, including Thalay Sagar, Bhrigupanth, and the Jogin group. Route finding, sustained altitude, and challenging terrain demand solid mountain experience and careful expedition planning.
Patangini Dhar is best suited to experienced Himalayan trekkers seeking a technical crossover rather than a conventional scenic trek.

Editor's Notes
7-day route reaching 16,125ft. Covers 45.0km of varied terrain.
→ See full itinerary with altitude profileRated challenging. Highly abrasive and technical. Involves navigating the 'Spider Wall', endless boulder hopping, and near-vertical scree slopes on the pass.
→ See difficulty breakdown and fitness guidePackages range from 20,000 - 28,000 INR (Dehradun to Dehradun). Inclusions and hidden costs vary by operator tier.
→ See full cost breakdownIt is rated as Difficult to Demanding. The ascent from Kedar Kharak to the pass involves climbing near-vertical, loose rock faces, and the descent into Nala Camp is notoriously slippery and punishing on the knees.
Yes. Gangotri sits at 10,000 ft. A minimum of 1-2 days of acclimatization here is critical before rapidly ascending towards the 14,460 ft Kedar Kharak camp.
Yes. Day 4 is dedicated to an acclimatization hike from Kedar Kharak to the spectacular Kedartal lake (15,400 ft), before turning towards the pass base camp on Day 5.
While generally considered a 'trekking pass', early season snow (May) or late autumn ice might require your guide to fix a safety rope on the steeper pitches of the pass.
BSNL/Jio networks work sporadically in Gangotri. Once you leave the town on Day 2, expect a complete communication blackout for 5 days.
Evacuation is extremely difficult. If injured before the pass, you must be carried down the steep 'Spider Wall' gorge back to Gangotri. If injured after the pass, evacuation is via the Rudugaira valley.
Absolutely prohibited. The trail to the pass is completely unmarked, covered in scree, and prone to rockfall. Local, experienced mountain guides are mandatory.
Standing on Patangini Dhar offers one of the best views in the Himalayas, including Thalaysagar (6,904 m), Bhrigupanth (6,772 m), and the Jogin peaks.
