Difficulty & Readiness Guide
Demanding. A serious high-altitude mountaineering crossover. The 16,125 ft pass requires navigating near-vertical scree and severe exposure.
The Question
Preparation Required
Advanced
Prior Experience
Required: At least 2-3 moderate Himalayan treks (above 13,000ft).
Highly technical trek requiring physical and mental preparation.
Route Knowledge
High-impact route characterised by steep gradients and heavy joint loading across a pass-crossing route featuring river crossings and scrambling and loose moraine.
Physiological Demand
Steep, punishing ascents and descents that will heavily tax your knees, ankles, and overall joint stability.
Challenging daily distances and steady climbs. Good cardiovascular fitness is required.
Significant time spent above 12,000ft. Expect shortness of breath and slower pacing.
Well-defined, stable trails with no technical maneuvers required.
Comfortable pacing with good recovery options.
Highly abrasive and technical. Involves navigating the 'Spider Wall', endless boulder hopping, and near-vertical scree slopes on the pass.
The pass crossing is a true mountaineering test. The lack of oxygen at 16,125 ft makes the steep ascent agonizingly slow.
Dropping from 16,125 ft to 12,300 ft in one day over loose scree is notorious for causing knee blowouts. Trekking poles are mandatory.
Aggressive. You spend three nights above 12,500 ft. Proper hydration and monitoring for AMS are critical.

Hazard Profile
Most injuries and failures on this trail can be avoided by making smarter decisions early on.
Bringing soft, low-ankle hiking shoes. The jagged boulders and scree will destroy them.
Skipping the acclimatization hike to Kedartal. The jump to Base Camp is too fast without it.
Not hiring specialized guides. The route over the pass is invisible to untrained eyes.
Severe AMS at Kedar Kharak and Base Camp
Rockfall in the Kedar Ganga gorge and on the pass
Slipping on the 'Spider Wall' or the steep scree descent
AMS (Altitude Sickness)
High risk. You sleep at 14,460 ft and 15,000 ft before crossing the pass. Your operator MUST carry emergency oxygen.
Evacuation Route
If injured before the pass, evacuation is via the steep gorge back to Gangotri. If injured on or after the pass, evacuation is via the Rudugaira valley. Both are extremely slow.
Solo Trekking
Absolutely prohibited. The trail over the pass is an unmarked scree field that is impossible to navigate safely without an experienced local mountain guide.
