The Patangini Dhar Pass Trek is a demanding crossover expedition in Gangotri National Park linking the Kedartal and Rudugaira valleys. Crossing Patangini Dhar at approximately 16,125 ft, the route traverses glacial moraines, loose scree, and high alpine terrain, making it suitable only for experienced trekkers with excellent fitness and prior high-altitude experience.
Trek Highlights
Kedartal Lake
An emerald glacial lake reflecting the towering, vertical granite face of Thalaysagar.
Patangini Dhar Pass
Standing on a razor-sharp 16,125 ft ridge separating two massive Himalayan valleys.
Spider Wall
A thrilling, narrow rock ledge traversing a sheer cliff face above the Kedar Ganga gorge.
It is rated as Difficult to Demanding. The ascent from Kedar Kharak to the pass involves climbing near-vertical, loose rock faces, and the descent into Nala Camp is notoriously slippery and punishing on the knees.
Do I need to acclimatize in Gangotri?
Yes. Gangotri sits at 10,000 ft. A minimum of 1-2 days of acclimatization here is critical before rapidly ascending towards the 14,460 ft Kedar Kharak camp.
Will I see Kedartal on this trek?
Yes. Day 4 is dedicated to an acclimatization hike from Kedar Kharak to the spectacular Kedartal lake (15,400 ft), before turning towards the pass base camp on Day 5.
Are there technical rope sections?
While generally considered a 'trekking pass', early season snow (May) or late autumn ice might require your guide to fix a safety rope on the steeper pitches of the pass.
Will my phone work?
BSNL/Jio networks work sporadically in Gangotri. Once you leave the town on Day 2, expect a complete communication blackout for 5 days.
What happens in a medical emergency?
Evacuation is extremely difficult. If injured before the pass, you must be carried down the steep 'Spider Wall' gorge back to Gangotri. If injured after the pass, evacuation is via the Rudugaira valley.
Can I do this solo?
Absolutely prohibited. The trail to the pass is completely unmarked, covered in scree, and prone to rockfall. Local, experienced mountain guides are mandatory.
What mountains will I see?
Standing on Patangini Dhar offers one of the best views in the Himalayas, including Thalaysagar (6,904 m), Bhrigupanth (6,772 m), and the Jogin peaks.
