Difficulty & Readiness Guide
An Easy-to-Moderate trek. While the altitude is safe, the continuous 3,200-foot ascent over just 7 km requires good leg strength and stamina.
The Question
Preparation Required
Intermediate
Prior Experience
Recommended: 1-2 easy Himalayan treks or regular hiking experience.
Highly technical trek requiring physical and mental preparation.
Route Knowledge
Fast-paced or high-mileage route demanding excellent cardiovascular fitness across a pass-crossing route.
Physiological Demand
Challenging daily distances and steady climbs. Good cardiovascular fitness is required.
Rolling or gradual terrain with minimal harsh impact on joints.
Comfortable pacing with good recovery options.
Well-defined, stable trails with no technical maneuvers required.
Below the major effects of altitude sickness. Air remains relatively dense.
The trail is a well-trodden dirt path heavily blanketed with fallen pine needles. While soft to walk on, dry pine needles on a steep gradient can act like ice skates.
The ascent is relentless. There are very few flat sections until you reach the meadow. It is a true test of calf and thigh endurance.
The 3,200-foot descent over 7 km will heavily impact the knees. Trekking poles are essential to prevent jarring impacts.
Altitude sickness is not a concern, but the rapid gain of 3,200 feet will cause heavy breathing. Hydrate well before starting.

Hazard Profile
Most injuries and failures on this trail can be avoided by making smarter decisions early on.
Not carrying enough water (expecting streams along the way).
Starting too late in the day, leading to walking through the forest in darkness.
Wearing smooth-soled sneakers instead of hiking shoes with deep lugs.
Knee strain on the steep, continuous descent
Getting disoriented if trekking without a guide
Dehydration
AMS (Altitude Sickness)
Not a factor. The 9,900 ft altitude is well within safe zones for 99% of trekkers.
Evacuation Route
Human carry or walking evacuation back down the 7km trail directly into the heart of Manali, where hospitals are minutes away.
Solo Trekking
Not recommended for first-timers due to the confusing network of forest trails. Highly experienced trekkers with offline GPS maps (like Maps.me) can attempt it solo during peak season.
Common Trail Ailments
๐ฅ Nearest ICU: Manali / Kullu
> Because it is so close to Manali, an emergency evacuation team can hike up from the town and reach a patient at Lamadugh in under 3 hours.
