Essential Planning Guide
Vibe & Scenery
Kush Kalyan is one of Garhwal's quieter meadow treks, traversing broad ridgelines and rolling bugyals that have long been used by local shepherds grazing livestock during the summer months. Although the route also serves as the traditional approach towards Sahastra Tal, Kush Kalyan itself offers a rewarding standalone trekking experience.
The trail climbs through forests before emerging onto expansive alpine meadows where uninterrupted grasslands stretch across gently rolling ridges. Throughout the trek, panoramic views extend towards the Gangotri group, Jaonli, Kedar Dome, and surrounding Garhwal peaks.
Without major technical obstacles or difficult glacier crossings, Kush Kalyan provides an excellent introduction to high Himalayan meadow trekking while remaining noticeably quieter than destinations such as Dayara Bugyal or Kedarkantha. Its combination of peaceful campsites, open landscapes, and moderate altitude makes it equally attractive to beginners building experience and seasoned trekkers looking for solitude.

Trekking in this region requires basic forest permits from the Uttarkashi Forest Department. The trail passes through protected alpine zones. Strict 'Leave No Trace' policies apply. Campfires are heavily discouraged near the bugyals to prevent forest fires and preserve the fragile meadow ecology. Ensure your operator handles the forest checkpoint clearances at Malla/Sila.

→ See full itinerary with altitude profileRated moderate. The trail is well-defined. The first half is a steep ascent through dense forest on an earthen trail, while the second half is a gentle, undulating walk on soft alpine grass.
→ See difficulty breakdown and fitness guidePackages range from ₹8,000 – ₹12,000. Inclusions and hidden costs vary by operator tier.
→ See full cost breakdownYes. While it involves some steep ascents through the oak forests from Malla, the maximum altitude is relatively low (~11,500 ft) and there are no technical glacial crossings. It is an excellent trek for fit beginners.
Kush Kalyan is a massive alpine meadow that serves as a campsite on the much longer Sahastra Tal expedition. Kush Kalyan peaks at ~11,000 ft and takes 5-6 days. Sahastra Tal is an extreme 12-day glacial lake trek reaching over 15,000 ft.
Yes. Most itineraries include a Day 4 excursion from the Kush Kalyan campsite further up the ridge to Kyarki Bugyal (~11,500 ft) to get closer views of the high peaks before returning.
During the monsoon (July-August) and immediately post-monsoon (early September), the dense oak forests between Malla and Sillachan are heavily infested with leeches. Wearing full pants and applying salt/tobacco water is recommended.
Because the maximum altitude does not exceed 12,000 ft, severe Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is rare. However, carrying Diamox is always recommended, and mild headaches can occur at the Kush Kalyan camp.
You will have BSNL/Jio network at the base village of Malla. Once you enter the forest towards Sillachan, network disappears entirely for the duration of the trek.
If you trek in late November or early April, you will encounter patches of snow in the meadows. During the prime seasons (May-June and Sept-Oct), the meadows are green or golden, free of snow.
On a clear day, the meadow offers a spectacular 180-degree panorama of the Garhwal giants, including Mt. Jaonli, the Gangotri massif, Kedar Dome, and Thalaysagar.
