Common Questions

Is the Kush Kalyan trek suitable for beginners?
Yes. While it involves some steep ascents through the oak forests from Malla, the maximum altitude is relatively low (~11,500 ft) and there are no technical glacial crossings. It is an excellent trek for fit beginners.
What is the difference between Kush Kalyan and Sahastra Tal?
Kush Kalyan is a massive alpine meadow that serves as a campsite on the much longer Sahastra Tal expedition. Kush Kalyan peaks at ~11,000 ft and takes 5-6 days. Sahastra Tal is an extreme 12-day glacial lake trek reaching over 15,000 ft.
Can we see Kyarki Bugyal on this trek?
Yes. Most itineraries include a Day 4 excursion from the Kush Kalyan campsite further up the ridge to Kyarki Bugyal (~11,500 ft) to get closer views of the high peaks before returning.
Are there leeches on this trail?
During the monsoon (July-August) and immediately post-monsoon (early September), the dense oak forests between Malla and Sillachan are heavily infested with leeches. Wearing full pants and applying salt/tobacco water is recommended.
Do I need Diamox for this trek?
Because the maximum altitude does not exceed 12,000 ft, severe Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is rare. However, carrying Diamox is always recommended, and mild headaches can occur at the Kush Kalyan camp.
Is there mobile network on the trek?
You will have BSNL/Jio network at the base village of Malla. Once you enter the forest towards Sillachan, network disappears entirely for the duration of the trek.
Will there be snow on the trail?
If you trek in late November or early April, you will encounter patches of snow in the meadows. During the prime seasons (May-June and Sept-Oct), the meadows are green or golden, free of snow.
What peaks are visible from Kush Kalyan?
On a clear day, the meadow offers a spectacular 180-degree panorama of the Garhwal giants, including Mt. Jaonli, the Gangotri massif, Kedar Dome, and Thalaysagar.
