Vibe & Scenery
The Kheerganga Trek follows one of the classic hiking routes of the Parvati Valley, climbing from Barshaini through forests, waterfalls, and traditional Himalayan villages to the meadow of Kheerganga at approximately 9,700 ft.
The destination is known for its natural hot springs and long-standing association with local Hindu mythology, making it both a trekking destination and a place of pilgrimage. Along the way, the trail passes villages such as Nakthan and Rudranag while following the upper Parvati River through dense forest.
Suitable for beginners and weekend trekkers, Kheerganga offers an accessible Himalayan trekking experience that combines mountain scenery, cultural heritage, and one of Himachal Pradesh's best-known natural hot springs.

Legend says Lord Kartikeya meditated here for thousands of years. The 'Kheer' (rice pudding) liked by the Gods once flowed through the river. Shiva converted it to water to maintain the world's order, but the milky color remains.

Kheerganga falls within the GHNP (Great Himalayan National Park) buffer zone. A nominal entry fee is collected at the Barshaini forest check post. As of 2023, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has imposed strict waste management rules — all trash must be carried back, no permanent structures are allowed at Kheerganga, and camping capacity is monitored. Night camping permits are required through registered operators. The hot spring area is maintained by a pujari (priest) and a nominal offering is expected.

Editor's Notes
Kheerganga's hot spring is the only high-altitude natural thermal pool in northern India that's accessible via a short trek. It's where mythology meets therapy.
Nakthan village's wooden Shiva temple is among the oldest in the Parvati Valley. The priest still performs daily rituals in a language that pre-dates modern Hindi.

While beautiful, the trail through the forest can be slippery and prone to leeches in July-August. Carry good rain gear.
Yes, several small refreshment shacks (cafes) are available at Nakthan village and midway on the forest route.
There are two main routes from Barshaini: one via Nakthan village and the other more scenic but steeper route via the Rudranag waterfalls.
The Kheerganga trek is easy to moderate. The trail is well-trodden and has gradual ascents. The last hour is somewhat steep, but it is entirely manageable for beginners with basic fitness levels.
Kheerganga can be visited throughout the year, but the best time is from March to June and September to November. Winter treks (December-February) are possible but the hot springs might be the only relief from the bitter cold.
While it can be completed in a single day (up and down in 8-9 hours), it is highly recommended to stay overnight. Camping under the stars and soaking in the hot springs in the morning is the main highlight of the trek.
Yes, Kheerganga is famous for its natural hot water springs (Parvati Kund). There are separated bathing areas for men and women, and taking a dip in the hot water after a long trek is incredibly relaxing.
