The Experience

Introduction

The Khaliya Top Trek begins near Munsiyari and climbs steadily through forests of oak and rhododendron before emerging onto the broad alpine meadows of Khaliya Bugyal. Despite its relatively short duration, the trek rewards visitors with some of the finest mountain panoramas in Kumaon.

From the upper ridge, trekkers enjoy sweeping views of the Panchachuli peaks alongside Nanda Devi East, Nanda Kot, Hardeol, and Rajrambha. During spring the forests bloom with rhododendrons, while winter transforms the meadows into snow-covered landscapes.

Suitable for beginners, photographers, and families with good fitness, Khaliya Top provides a rewarding high-altitude experience without the logistical demands of longer Himalayan expeditions.

    Editor's Insight

During March/April, leave the Munsiyari roadhead early (8 AM). The Rhododendron forest is spectacular in the hard morning light, and you avoid the afternoon cloud buildup.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Is Khaliya Top suitable for absolute beginners and children?

Yes. The walking is relatively short (around 6km each way), the trail is wide and safe, and the altitude gain is gradual. Active children above 8 years old do this trek frequently.

Do I need to carry tents?

No. There is a well-maintained KMVN (Kumaon Mandal Vikas Nigam) alpine rest house situated just below the top at Bhujani, along with private eco-camps. Tents are only needed if you specifically want to camp wildly.

Can I see Nanda Devi from here?

You can see Nanda Devi East clearly on a non-cloudy day, though the Panchachuli peaks take center stage visually.

How do I reach the starting point?

You must reach Munsiyari (a 10-12 hour drive from Kathgodam/Nainital). The trek starts at Balati Bend, about 8km before Munsiyari town.

Can I do it in the snow?

Yes! Khaliya Top is famous as a winter trek. From late December to March, the meadows are covered in thick snow, making it a brilliant, accessible winter experience similar to Kedarkantha.

    Do I need a high-altitude guide?

In summer, the trail is so obvious you can do it independently. In deep winter snow, hiring a local guide from Munsiyari is highly recommended so you don't lose the trail in the forest.

Do I need an Inner Line Permit?

No. Despite being in Munsiyari, Khaliya Top is purely domestic forest trekking and does not push toward the border lines. No ILP required.

    Are there leeches?

During the monsoon (July/August), the dense oak forests on the lower half of the trek are heavily infested with leeches.

    How cold does it get?

In May/June, it is pleasant (10°C to 15°C). In winter (Jan/Feb), the nighttime temperature at the KMVN camp drops to -10°C.

Can I combine this with Birthi Falls?

Yes. Birthi falls is located on the main driving road to Munsiyari. You stop and see it on Day 1 before reaching town.
