Common Questions

How difficult is the Kartik Swami trek?
It is an easy, beginner-friendly day hike. It is only 3km one-way from the village of Kanakchauri and mostly follows a gentle, upward slope through the forest until the final 100 meters of stairs.
Is it safe to hike in the dark for sunrise?
Yes. The path is roughly 3km long and very well-trodden, but carrying a strong headlamp is essential because the stone stairs near the temple ridge can be slippery with morning dew.
Can elderly people do this trek?
Yes, but they must take it slowly. While short, the altitude is 10,000 ft, meaning shortness of breath is common. The final approach features 80 steep stairs.
Are there any food stalls on the way?
There is a small stall right before the final stair ascent to the temple that sells tea/Maggi, but it only opens after 8:00 AM.
What is the mythological significance?
According to legend, Lord Shiva threw a challenge to his sons Ganesha and Kartikeya to circle the universe. Ganesha circled his parents, winning the challenge. An angry Kartikeya sacrificed his flesh here, leaving his bones as a testament to his devotion.
How long does it take from Kanakchauri?
A slow walker will take about 1.5 to 2 hours to reach the temple summit. The descent takes 45 minutes.
Which peaks are visible?
A vast arc including Chaukhamba, Kedarnath Dome, Trishul, Nanda Ghunti, and Bandarpunch.
Can I camp near the temple?
No. Camping directly on the temple ridge is prohibited for religious reasons and practically impossible due to wind and lack of flat ground. You stay in Kanakchauri.
Is there mobile network?
Yes. Kanakchauri and the temple itself have surprisingly decent Jio and Airtel connectivity.
When does the rhododendron bloom?
Late March to April. The entire 3km trail turns a blinding, vibrant pink/red.
