Essential Planning Guide
Located in the deeply traditional Pindar valley of the Kumaon Himalayas, the Kafni Glacier trek is often considered the more pristine, less-commercialized cousin of the famous Pindari Glacier trek. Both treks share the same initial gorgeous trail from the village of Loharkhet up through the dense forests of Dhakuri, but diverge at Dwali. While Pindari draws the heavy crowds, the trail to Kafni veers sharply right strictly following the rushing Kafni river. At the top, trekkers are rewarded with zero-point glaciated views of Mt. Nanda Kot (6,861m) and the formidable Nandabhanar. What makes Kafni so stunning is its immense floral diversity—the upper valleys are violently colorful in the pre-monsoon season, contrasting sharply against the icy backdrop of the main glacier.

Caution
Do not rush past the Dhakuri pass view. It is often fully clear in the morning but cloaks over in cloud by noon. The Nanda Kot reveal here is legendary.

Pindari is grander and more famous, but it suffers from heavy commercial traffic. Kafni offers identical starting scenery but guarantees far more solitude, wild flora, and a much quieter glacier zero point.
Yes, absolutely. Like Pindari, the gradients are surprisingly well-managed for a Himalayan trek, making it an excellent first 'big glacier' trek for determined beginners.
Zero Point sits at roughly 12,795 feet (3,900m), which is moderate by Himalayan standards, keeping severe AMS risks relatively low.
Yes. The Kumaon Mandal Vikas Nigam (KMVN) maintains basic stone huts and dormitories at Loharkhet, Dhakuri, Khati, and Dwali, which drastically reduces the need to carry heavy tents.
While the main route to Dwali is a highway by trekking standards, the detour up the Kafni valley to Khatia and Zero Point can be obscured by landslides or snow. A local guide from Khati village is highly recommended.
Yes. The trek requires crossing the 8,790 ft Dhakuri Pass on Day 2, which offers one of the most spectacular, sudden reveals of the Nanda Devi/Nanda Kot range.
The trek traditionally starts at Loharkhet, though new road constructions are pushing the jeepable road slightly closer to the trailheads.
Dead zone. After leaving Kapkot/Loharkhet, you will have zero mobile network for the next 7 days.
Mt. Nanda Kot (6,861m) dominates the sky entirely. You also get excellent views of Nandabhanar (6,236m).
Yes. Many hardcore trekkers spend 2 extra days by branching at Dwali, doing Pindari Zero point one day, and Kafni Zero Point the next.
