The quieter sibling of the Pindari glacier. Kafni glacier (12,500 ft) is wider and more secluded, located at the base of Mt. Nandakot. The trail is exceptionally rich in Himalayan flora and offers a gentler but deeper wilderness experience in the Pindar valley of Kumaon.
Trek Highlights
Dhakuri Pass Sunrise
Standing at the lip of the pass, watching the massive southern wall of the Nanda Devi sanctuary light up in orange.
Pindari is grander and more famous, but it suffers from heavy commercial traffic. Kafni offers identical starting scenery but guarantees far more solitude, wild flora, and a much quieter glacier zero point.
Can beginners do the Kafni Glacier trek?
Yes, absolutely. Like Pindari, the gradients are surprisingly well-managed for a Himalayan trek, making it an excellent first 'big glacier' trek for determined beginners.
What is the peak altitude?
Zero Point sits at roughly 12,795 feet (3,900m), which is moderate by Himalayan standards, keeping severe AMS risks relatively low.
Are there KMVN rest houses available?
Yes. The Kumaon Mandal Vikas Nigam (KMVN) maintains basic stone huts and dormitories at Loharkhet, Dhakuri, Khati, and Dwali, which drastically reduces the need to carry heavy tents.
Do I need a local guide?
While the main route to Dwali is a highway by trekking standards, the detour up the Kafni valley to Khatia and Zero Point can be obscured by landslides or snow. A local guide from Khati village is highly recommended.
Will we cross the Dhakuri pass?
Yes. The trek requires crossing the 8,790 ft Dhakuri Pass on Day 2, which offers one of the most spectacular, sudden reveals of the Nanda Devi/Nanda Kot range.
Where does the trek start?
The trek traditionally starts at Loharkhet, though new road constructions are pushing the jeepable road slightly closer to the trailheads.
Is mobile network available?
Dead zone. After leaving Kapkot/Loharkhet, you will have zero mobile network for the next 7 days.
What peaks are visible from Kafni?
Mt. Nanda Kot (6,861m) dominates the sky entirely. You also get excellent views of Nandabhanar (6,236m).
Can I combine this with Pindari?
Yes. Many hardcore trekkers spend 2 extra days by branching at Dwali, doing Pindari Zero point one day, and Kafni Zero Point the next.
Is Kafni better than Pindari Glacier?
Pindari is grander and more famous, but it suffers from heavy commercial traffic. Kafni offers identical starting scenery but guarantees far more solitude, wild flora, and a much quieter glacier zero point.
