Seasonal Verdict

When should you go?

A spectacular crossover from the lush Kullu valley to the barren deserts of Spiti. It is uniquely positioned as a prime monsoon trek, as the Spiti side sits in the rain shadow. Winter brings impassable snowpack.

Editor's Notes

Editor's Insight

September is the best month — clearest skies of the season, sharpest Kullu-to-Lahaul contrast at the pass, and river crossings at their most manageable. Fewer operator batches run in September so book early.

Important Advisory

June river crossings are thigh-deep icy water with active snowmelt. The same crossing that is knee-high at 7 AM is dangerous by 1 PM. June is doable but not a beginner month on this trek.

Planning Tip

July and August have peak wildflowers and most operator batches — but also the most rain and highest river levels. Best for photography, not for the easiest experience.
