A high-altitude shepherd trail connecting Bharmour in Chamba to the Lahaul valley. Chobia Pass (16,500 ft) is a rugged journey through the heart of the Pir Panjal range, featuring massive glaciers, vertical rock walls, and a deep-dive into the nomadic lifestyle of the Gaddi shepherds.
Expedition Highlights
The Blue Ice
Looking down into a 40-foot deep crevasse, glowing an eerie, terrifying neon blue inside the heart of the glacier.
It is slightly lower but steeper, narrower, and much more technically demanding. The glacier on the Chamba approach is heavily broken and notoriously difficult to navigate safely.
Can I join a fixed departure group?
No. Commercial trekking companies do not run fixed departures for Chobia. It must be organized as a customized, private alpine expedition.
Is it safe from wild animals?
The lower Chamba forests approaching Alyas basecamp are prime Himalayan Brown Bear territory. Keep camps clean and travel in groups.
Do I need to rope up?
Absolutely. Roping up on the Chamba-side glacier is a non-negotiable survival requirement due to hidden snow bridges over deep crevasses.
Are there crossing options back?
Once you cross into Lahaul, you must drive out via Manali or Keylong. Re-crossing the pass the next day is practically unheard of due to exhaustion.
Is there mobile signal?
Zero. You lose it at Chobia village on Day 2 and don't regain it until you hit the road in Lahaul on Day 6.
Will we see other people?
Except for perhaps one or two nomadic Gaddi camps lower down, you will be in total isolation.
What happens if we get stuck in a storm?
You retreat to Alyas basecamp and wait. Pushing the pass in a whiteout or storm is universally considered suicidal.
Are mules used?
Mules can only reach the lower meadow camps. Above that, all gear must be hauled by specialized local high-altitude porters.
How long is the summit day?
12 to 15 hours. It requires starting at 2 AM on the glacier and usually lasts until you safely reach the dry valley floor in Lahaul by late afternoon.
How does it compare to Kugti Pass?
