Essential Planning Guide
Vibe & Scenery
At approximately 4,984 m (16,350 ft), Chobia Pass is among the least-traveled crossings of the Pir Panjal Range. Historically used by Gaddi shepherds moving between seasonal grazing grounds, the route has largely disappeared from commercial trekking, surviving today as an expedition reserved for highly experienced alpine teams.
Beginning from the Bharmour region of Chamba, the expedition climbs through dense cedar forests, remote shepherd camps, and rugged alpine valleys before reaching heavily crevassed glaciers beneath the pass. The final ascent demands careful movement over unstable moraine, snowfields, and steep ice slopes before crossing into the stark landscapes of Lahaul.
Far removed from established trekking routes, the Chobia Pass Expedition offers absolute solitude, demanding navigation, and one of the most authentic wilderness crossings remaining in the Western Himalayas.

The rope team is not a suggestion; it is a lifeline. If you punch through a snow bridge, that rope is the only thing stopping a 100-foot freefall.
6-day route reaching 16,293ft. Covers 47km of varied terrain.
→ See full itinerary with altitude profileRated moderate. Highly glaciated. Massive terminal moraines. The descent into Lahaul is essentially sliding down thousands of feet of loose dust and sharp rock.
→ See difficulty breakdown and fitness guidePackages range from ₹30,000 to ₹45,000. Inclusions and hidden costs vary by operator tier.
→ See full cost breakdownIt is slightly lower but steeper, narrower, and much more technically demanding. The glacier on the Chamba approach is heavily broken and notoriously difficult to navigate safely.
No. Commercial trekking companies do not run fixed departures for Chobia. It must be organized as a customized, private alpine expedition.
The lower Chamba forests approaching Alyas basecamp are prime Himalayan Brown Bear territory. Keep camps clean and travel in groups.
Absolutely. Roping up on the Chamba-side glacier is a non-negotiable survival requirement due to hidden snow bridges over deep crevasses.
Once you cross into Lahaul, you must drive out via Manali or Keylong. Re-crossing the pass the next day is practically unheard of due to exhaustion.
Zero. You lose it at Chobia village on Day 2 and don't regain it until you hit the road in Lahaul on Day 6.
Except for perhaps one or two nomadic Gaddi camps lower down, you will be in total isolation.
You retreat to Alyas basecamp and wait. Pushing the pass in a whiteout or storm is universally considered suicidal.
Mules can only reach the lower meadow camps. Above that, all gear must be hauled by specialized local high-altitude porters.
12 to 15 hours. It requires starting at 2 AM on the glacier and usually lasts until you safely reach the dry valley floor in Lahaul by late afternoon.
