Chobia Pass Expedition — Complete Guide (2026)

Introduction

Chobia Pass (approx. 16,350 ft) is Kugti Pass's darker, more dangerous, and utterly forgotten sister route across the Pir Panjal. Connecting the Chamba Valley to Lahaul, this route sees almost zero commercial trekking activity. Reserved strictly for hardcore alpine enthusiasts and the most daring of local Gaddi shepherds, the Chobia route involves forging through dense, bear-infested forests near Chobia village before confronting a massively broken, steep, and deeply crevassed glacier. The final 1,500 feet to the pass is a brutal vertical wall of ice and loose scree. Crossing Chobia is committing to absolute isolation, requiring high technical competence, ropes, and ice axes. The descent drops precipitously into the barren Lahaul valley, concluding an expedition that is as much a test of psychological endurance as physical strength.

Caution

The rope team is not a suggestion; it is a lifeline. If you punch through a snow bridge, that rope is the only thing stopping a 100-foot freefall.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does it compare to Kugti Pass?

It is slightly lower but steeper, narrower, and much more technically demanding. The glacier on the Chamba approach is heavily broken and notoriously difficult to navigate safely.

Can I join a fixed departure group?

No. Commercial trekking companies do not run fixed departures for Chobia. It must be organized as a customized, private alpine expedition.

Is it safe from wild animals?

The lower Chamba forests approaching Alyas basecamp are prime Himalayan Brown Bear territory. Keep camps clean and travel in groups.

Do I need to rope up?

Absolutely. Roping up on the Chamba-side glacier is a non-negotiable survival requirement due to hidden snow bridges over deep crevasses.

Are there crossing options back?

Once you cross into Lahaul, you must drive out via Manali or Keylong. Re-crossing the pass the next day is practically unheard of due to exhaustion.

Is there mobile signal?

Zero. You lose it at Chobia village on Day 2 and don't regain it until you hit the road in Lahaul on Day 6.

Will we see other people?

Except for perhaps one or two nomadic Gaddi camps lower down, you will be in total isolation.

What happens if we get stuck in a storm?

You retreat to Alyas basecamp and wait. Pushing the pass in a whiteout or storm is universally considered suicidal.

Are mules used?

Mules can only reach the lower meadow camps. Above that, all gear must be hauled by specialized local high-altitude porters.

How long is the summit day?

12 to 15 hours. It requires starting at 2 AM on the glacier and usually lasts until you safely reach the dry valley floor in Lahaul by late afternoon.
