The Experience

Introduction

The Chadar Trek follows the frozen surface of the Zanskar River during the peak of Ladakh's winter, when temperatures regularly fall below -20°C and sections of the river transform into a sheet of solid ice known locally as a *chadar*.

Historically, this frozen river served as the primary winter route connecting remote villages of Zanskar with the outside world. Today, the trek remains one of the world's most distinctive winter adventures, winding through towering rock canyons, frozen waterfalls, and constantly changing ice formations.

Success on the Chadar Trek depends as much on adapting to extreme cold as on physical endurance. Suitable for experienced trekkers prepared for severe winter conditions, it is an expedition unlike any other in the Himalayas.
