Hotel stay. Evening stroll through Joshimath market. Technical: A massive 10-hour drive through the Alaknanda valley. Road conditions are generally good but check for seasonal blockages at Lambagar. Joshimath is at 6k ft; start drinking 4L water immediately. Landscape: Joshimath is the entry point to the high Garhwal. It is where the legendary Pundit explorers and early British climbers stayed before their attempts on Nanda Devi. Safety: Final reliable pharmacy and ATM are here. Joshimath is sinking — observe local construction guidelines. Check your permit status tonight.
Key Landmarks
First night in tents or local village school grounds. Technical: Drive to Jumma is 1.5 hours. Trek starts with a steep switchback climb from the river bank. Gain of 2,000ft in 3km. Trail is narrow and subject to sliding rock. Focus on breath-pacing. Landscape: The Dhauliganga river carries the stories of the 2021 disaster. Jumma is a tiny outpost near the border. Ruing is a high-altitude agricultural village known for its hardy sheep. Safety: Permit check at the ITBP post near Jumma. No photos of the Dhauliganga dams. Oximeter check in Ruing.
Key Landmarks
Staying At
Night stay in village homestays for a true 'Johar' cultural experience. Technical: Steady ascent through high-altitude forests. The air thins noticeably today as you cross the 11k ft mark. Dronagiri village is perched on a massive cliff. Landscape: Dronagiri is the famous 'Sanjeevani' village. Locals claim Hanuman took a part of their mountain, and because of this, they do not worship Hanuman. Safety: Extreme hydration day. You are entering the AMS trigger zone. Drink 5L water. No exertion after arrival.
Key Landmarks
Staying At
Final night before heading to the glacier base. Technical: Light climb to a nearby high ridge to trigger biological adaptation. 12.5k ft peak for the day. Rest for the remainder. Landscape: The massive north face of Dunagiri peak looms over the village. It is one of the most technical 7,000m peaks in the world. Safety: Monitor for sleep-apnea or mild headaches. Inform guide immediately if symptoms persist.
Key Landmarks
Night stay in tents. The scale of the mountains here is overwhelming. Technical: Trek moves into the high-alpine zone. No more trees. Walking on glacial debris and moraine. River crossing requires a human chain or guide assistance. Landscape: Longatulli is a vast moraine flat where Changabang base camp expeditions usually sort their gear. You are now in the inner circle of the Nanda Devi peaks. Safety: Cold wind-chill. Night temps fall to -10C. Layering must be ready by 5 PM. Check for 'Sluggishness' (signs of HAPE).
Key Landmarks
Staying At
Long return walk to Longatulli. Celebration of reaching the core. Technical: Trek on the lateral moraine of the Bagini glacier. Shifting rocks and glacial ice patches. The walk to Changabang BC is technical and requires high focus. Landscape: Changabang is legendary in the climbing world for its near-vertical granite walls. You are closer to the inner sancutary of Nanda Devi than almost anywhere else. Safety: Turnback Time: 12:30 PM. The glacial melt makes the return river crossings deep and dangerous in the afternoon sun.
Key Landmarks
Staying At
A massive descent. Be careful with speed. Homestay at Ruing.
Final short trek and return drive. Reach Joshimath for a celebratory dinner.
An early morning start for the long 9-hour drive back along the Alaknanda and Ganga rivers, concluding your expedition as you arrive back in Rishikesh by evening.
Extended hike to the amphitheater of granite walls surrounding the Bagini glacier snout.
