Hotel stay. Evening stroll through Joshimath market. Technical: A massive 10-hour drive through the Alaknanda valley. Road conditions are generally good but check for seasonal blockages at Lambagar. Joshimath is at 6k ft; start drinking 4L water immediately. Landscape: Joshimath is the entry point to the high Garhwal. It is where the legendary Pundit explorers and early British climbers stayed before their attempts on Nanda Devi. Safety: Final reliable pharmacy and ATM are here. Night stay in village homestays for a true 'Johar' cultural experience. Technical: Steady ascent through high-altitude forests. The air thins noticeably today as you cross the 11k ft mark. Dronagiri village is perched on a massive cliff. Landscape: Dronagiri is the famous 'Sanjeevani' village. Locals claim Hanuman took a part of their mountain, and because of this, they do not worship Hanuman. Safety: Extreme hydration day. You are entering the AMS trigger zone. Drink 5L water. No exertion after arrival.

River crossing requires a human chain or guide assistance. Landscape: Longatulli is a vast moraine flat where Changabang base camp expeditions usually sort their gear. You are now in the inner circle of the Nanda Devi peaks. Safety: Cold wind-chill. Night temps fall to -10C. Layering must be ready by 5 PM. Check for 'Sluggishness' (signs of HAPE).

Long return walk to Longatulli. Celebration of reaching the core. Technical: Trek on the lateral moraine of the Bagini glacier. Shifting rocks and glacial ice patches. The walk to Changabang BC is technical and requires high focus. Landscape: Changabang is legendary in the climbing world for its near-vertical granite walls. You are closer to the inner sancutary of Nanda Devi than almost anywhere else. Safety: Turnback Time: 12:30 PM. The glacial melt makes the return river crossings deep and dangerous in the afternoon sun.
