Difficulty & Readiness Guide
Moderate. A highly accessible expedition. The trekking is mostly across flat or gently rolling meadows, with only one steep day to reach the high-altitude lakes.
The Question
Preparation Required
Intermediate
Prior Experience
Recommended: 1-2 easy Himalayan treks or regular hiking experience.
Highly technical trek requiring physical and mental preparation.
Route Knowledge
Endurance-focused route with significant physical taxation across a pass-crossing route featuring loose moraine.
Physiological Demand
Challenging daily distances and steady climbs. Good cardiovascular fitness is required.
Comfortable pacing with good recovery options.
Below the major effects of altitude sickness. Air remains relatively dense.
Rolling or gradual terrain with minimal harsh impact on joints.
Well-defined, stable trails with no technical maneuvers required.
The trek is roughly 30% steep forest trail, 50% flat rolling alpine meadows, and 20% steep rocky moraine (near the lakes).
The day trip to the Greater Lakes is a stark contrast to the easy meadows. It involves steep, rocky ascents to 13,500 ft.
The final day is a massive 4,500 ft drop. The forest floor can be slippery if it rained recently.
Excellent acclimatization profile. You spend 4 days walking between 9,500 ft and 11,500 ft before attempting the 13,500 ft lakes.

Yes
Solo Female Travelers
Very safe when trekking with an organized group. Do not trek solo due to the extreme isolation of the meadows.
Hazard Profile
Most injuries and failures on this trail can be avoided by making smarter decisions early on.
Not bringing trekking poles for the massive descent on Day 6.
Wandering off alone in the meadows. Heavy fog can roll in instantly, dropping visibility to zero.
Assuming it's a flat walk. While Tosa Maidan itself is flat, getting there and reaching the lakes requires serious climbing.
Knee injuries on the massive 4,500 ft descent on Day 6
Getting lost in the vast meadows if heavy fog rolls in
Minor altitude sickness on the lake day
AMS (Altitude Sickness)
Low risk. The gradual ascent over 4 days provides excellent acclimatization.
Evacuation Route
Ground evacuation is relatively straightforward. Mules can carry a patient across the flat meadows back to Drung in 6-8 hours.
Solo Trekking
Not recommended. The trails are unmarked shepherd routes. Fog can drop visibility to 10 feet, making navigation across the 3,000-acre meadow impossible.
Common Trail Ailments
๐ฅ Nearest ICU: Srinagar
> The flat nature of the main meadow makes mule evacuation highly efficient compared to rocky, technical treks.
