Essential Planning Guide
Vibe & Scenery
Rising above the hills east of Shimla, Shali Tibba offers one of the finest viewpoints in the region. The trail ascends steadily through forests of pine, cedar, and oak before reaching the summit, where the centuries-old Shali Mata Temple stands against a backdrop of Himalayan peaks.
Despite its proximity to Shimla, the route remains quieter than many nearby tourist destinations, making it an excellent choice for a peaceful weekend hike.
Moderate distances, relatively low altitude, and rewarding summit views make Shali Tibba suitable for beginners with reasonable fitness as well as experienced hikers looking for a short mountain escape.

Yes. Fit hikers regularly drive from Shimla to Khatnol early in the morning, complete the 14 km round trip to the summit, and drive back to Shimla by evening. However, a 2-day camping itinerary is much more relaxing.
No. Once you leave the base village of Khatnol, there are no reliable natural water sources on the trail. You must carry at least 2 to 3 liters of water per person from the start.
Solo trekking is not recommended, especially late in the day. The dense forests of the Shali range are home to Himalayan black bears and leopards. Always trek in a group and make noise while walking.
The summit features a highly revered temple dedicated to Goddess Bhimakali. It is a sacred space for locals. From the temple courtyard, you get uninterrupted views of the snow-capped Kinnaur and Lahaul ranges.
For minor issues, Khatnol has a small health center. For serious medical emergencies, the Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC) in Shimla is about a 2-hour drive from the base.
No. The summit is a revered Hindu pilgrimage site. Consuming alcohol or carrying non-vegetarian food near the temple or on the upper trails is strictly prohibited and highly offensive to locals.
If you trek between late December and February, the upper sections of the trail and the summit are usually covered in a beautiful layer of winter snow.
