Essential Planning Guide
Rangthar is a hidden high-altitude meadow at approximately 11,800 ft tucked on a lateral ridge arm above the Tirthan valley, sitting on the boundary between the GHNP buffer zone and the forest reserve land of the Kullu hills. The meadow is characterized by an extraordinary carpet of wildflowers in May-June — a density and diversity that rivals the famous Buran Ghati and Hampta meadows but without any of their crowds. The approach from the Sai Ropa GHNP visitor center area climbs steeply through GHNP buffer zone forest before emerging onto the open meadow of Rangthar, which sits like a natural amphitheatre facing south toward the Shimla hills. Local Gushaini naturalists consider the Rangthar meadow area one of the most important photographic wildflower sites in the entire GHNP buffer corridor, with documented species including Himalayan Blue Poppy, Primula, Wild Orchid, Potentilla, and multiple Anemone species reaching peak bloom from late May to early July. The return route can be varied for a semi-loop, making Rangthar one of the few meadow treks in the Tirthan area with true loop potential.

The Blue Poppy Hunt
Key point
The Himalayan Blue Poppy at Rangthar grows specifically in the boulder-and-shaded-slope habitat at the upper meadow edge. Your naturalist guide knows the exact rock systems where it shelters. Without this knowledge, you may walk past it without seeing it — the bloom is surprisingly subtle and blends with the blue-gray rock.
