Essential Planning Guide
Ralam Glacier is a deeply hidden, extraordinarily brutal, and pristine trekking circuit branching off the historic Johar Valley in Kumaon. While most trekkers from Munsiyari march straight up the Gori Ganga river to Milam Glacier or the Nanda Devi East Base Camp, the route to Ralam diverts sharply eastward from Bugdiyar into an intensely narrow, virtually un-trekked gorge. The trek culminates at the Ralam Glacier—a massive confluence of three distinct glacier snouts (Kalabaland, Yangchar, and Ralam). The village of Ralam itself is perched at 12,000 ft and is only inhabited for a few months during the short summer. This trek offers absolute, intimidating isolation. There is no KMVN infrastructure, no tea houses, and frequently, no other human beings for days. It is strictly recommended for elite trekkers and mountaineers seeking raw, unpolished Kumaon wilderness.

It is classified as a moderate trek. It takes 10 days and reaches a maximum altitude of 15000 ft. Trekkers should have steady cardiovascular endurance.
Since the trail climbs up to 15000 ft, there is a distinct risk of AMS. Proper hydration, progressive pacing, and gradual acclimatization are highly advised.
The trekking window is razor-thin due to the gorge topography. Mid-May to mid-June, and mid-September to mid-October. Any other time is either buried in snow or a lethal landslide zone during the monsoon.
Connectivity is highly sporadic. The last reliable mobile signal is at Munsiyari (Jio/BSNL). Dark zone thereafter.. Expect complete digital isolation on the trail.
The last active ATM is located at Munsiyari. It is strongly recommended to withdraw sufficient cash at major transit hubs before starting.
Fresh stream water is abundant, but water treatment is mandatory. Filtration highly advised.
Rental options at Munsiyari / Lilam are extremely limited. It is best to rent or purchase all essential gear in major hubs before reaching the base.
Required. Trekkers must register and obtain an Inner Line Permit (ILP) from the SDM office in Munsiyari. This requires Police Verification. Foreign Nationals must apply well in advance through recognized mountaineering agencies.
A stretcher cannot navigate the Ralam gorge. Rescue requires being physically carried by local porters to Bugdiyar. In case of extreme emergencies, helicopter evacuation can be coordinated if weather allows.
The nearest specialized ICU is Haldwani / Kathgodam. For minor injuries, the nearest primary health center is located at Munsiyari District Hospital.
Absolutely impossible by law and by nature. The local communities are exceptionally welcoming and hospitable, but having a guide is highly recommended.
