Vibe & Scenery

The Experience

Introduction

The Pushtar Bugyal Trek is best known for one of the Himalayas' most memorable ridge walks. Unlike conventional trekking routes that remain within valleys, this trail follows the crest of Phulara Ridge, offering continuous panoramic views throughout much of the day.

Located inside Govind Wildlife Sanctuary, the trek passes through forests before emerging onto open ridgelines overlooking Swargarohini, Bandarpoonch, Black Peak (Kalanag), and the surrounding Garhwal ranges. The journey eventually descends into the rolling alpine meadows of Pushtar Bugyal, where broad grasslands replace the exposed ridge.

Compared with popular treks such as Kedarkantha, the route remains relatively uncrowded while delivering equally impressive mountain scenery. Its combination of panoramic ridge walking, flower-filled meadows, and moderate difficulty makes it suitable for both experienced trekkers and enthusiastic beginners.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a 'ridge walk', and why is it special?

A ridge walk means trekking along the very top edge of a mountain range. Unlike valley treks where your views are blocked by surrounding mountains, the Phulara Ridge gives you an unobstructed, continuous 270-degree view of the Greater Himalayas for hours.

How difficult is the Pushtara Bugyal Trek?

It is graded Easy-to-Moderate. The ascents to Sikolta and Bhoj Gadi are gradual. The most physically demanding section is the ridge walk and the subsequent descent into Pushtara Bugyal.

Is it crowded like Kedarkantha?

No. While it starts at the same base camp (Sankri), the trail diverges quickly. Pushtara Bugyal is heavily restricted and sees a fraction of the foot traffic compared to Kedarkantha.

Is there a risk of altitude sickness (AMS)?

You sleep at 11,100 ft (Bhoj Gadi) and cross 12,150 ft on the ridge. While the ascent is gradual enough to allow acclimatization, mild AMS symptoms like headaches can occur. Proper hydration is critical.

Is there water available on the Phulara Ridge?

No. The ridge itself has no water sources. You must carry at least 2 liters of water from the Bhoj Gadi camp to last until you descend to Pushtara Bugyal.

Can beginners do this trek?

Yes, provided they have a good baseline fitness level. You should be able to jog 5km in 30-35 minutes to comfortably enjoy the ridge walk without exhaustion.

Will there be snow on the trail?

If trekking in early May, expect residual snow patches on the Phulara Ridge. By June, the snow melts to reveal green meadows. November brings the first fresh winter snows.

Is mobile network available?

You will have limited connectivity (BSNL/Jio) in Sankri. Beyond that, the entire trek is a dead zone.
