Pick up at 6:30 AM. Homestay stay in Khati for authentic cultural immersion. Technical: A massive drive through the spinal road of Kumaon. Since 2024, the road extension from Kharkiya to Khati has reduced trekking by 4km, but the road is extremely narrow and subject to monsoon washouts. Safety: Ensure you stop in Bageshwar for any last-minute medical supplies; it is the last proper pharmacy for the next 5 days.
Key Landmarks
The journey follows the mountain river corridor, transitioning from the broader plains into the steep-sided topography approaching the high country.

Night stay in KMVN bungalows or tents. The sound of the twin rivers is rhythmic and loud. Technical: Gradual trail with some landslide-prone narrow sections over the Pindar river. The 'Old Trail' was destroyed in 2013; the new trail is higher and safer but requires more up-and-down walking. Safety: Bridge Stability: After sudden rain, the confluence bridge can be slippery. Cross with caution and maintain distance between trekkers.
Key Landmarks
Staying At
The trail follows the mountain river corridor through a narrow, forested gorge, moving past traditional settlements into increasingly dense dense forested valleys.

KEY ACTIONRiver Crossings
Plan to cross early in the day before snowmelt swells the water levels. Unclip backpack waist belts before crossing.

Phurkia offers one of the best views of the Nanda Devi East massive. Early dinner and rest. Technical: Steepest climb of the trek. You transition from forest to the alpine zone. Terrain is mostly stone steps and rocky path. Thinner air will be noticeably felt today. Safety: AMS Alert: 10,500ft is the threshold for many. Drink 4L water. If a headache persists, do not proceed to Zero Point tomorrow.

Today's Objective
Celebration at Zero Point. Return to Dwali is long but mostly downhill. Technical: Long day on glaciated moraine. The trail to Zero Point is a wide U-shaped valley floor. Final 1km is on loose rocks and old terminal moraine. Requires careful footwork. Safety: Turnback Time: 1:30 PM. Clouds usually cover the peaks by early afternoon, causing visibility issues in the valley.
Key Landmarks
Staying At
The gorge transitions briefly into a barren moraine basin before returning to the forest.
Field Notes
Use Trekking Poles
Trekking poles are highly recommended to save your knees on the descent.
INFOSlower Progress
Progress will be significantly slower and more taxing on your ankles than trail distance suggests.

Stay in Khati homestay. Final night in the mountains. Technical: Fast descent on well-trodden paths. Easy on the lungs, moderate on the knees. Enjoy the forest canopy once more. Safety: Watch for mules on the narrow sections between Dwali and Khati; always stand on the valley side when they pass.
Key Landmarks
The high alpine meadows narrow into forested river terraces as tree line vegetation reappears in the lower mountain river corridor.
