After a short 20-minute drive from Manali to the village of Shanag, the trek begins immediately with a steep ascent. You leave the apple orchards behind and enter a dense, dark forest of ancient deodar and pine trees. The trail is an unrelenting uphill climb on dirt and tree roots until it flattens slightly at a clearing near Alyias Nallah, which serves as your base camp for the expedition.

Today's Objective
An alpine start is required. You break through the tree line into expansive alpine meadows. The first objective is the hidden Majhach Lake, a serene, oval glacial body of water. After resting at the lake, the climb becomes steeper and rockier, pushing up the exposed Mangankot ridge. From the summit (13,100 ft), you are rewarded with an amphitheater of 6,000m peaks, including Hanuman Tibba and Makerbeh. Descend carefully back to Alyias Nallah.
Key Landmarks
Staying At
The environment transitions into open alpine meadows. The route ascends to an exposed ridge line.
Field Notes
Use Trekking Poles
Trekking poles are highly recommended to save your knees on the descent.
INFOSlower Progress
Progress will be significantly slower and more taxing on your ankles than trail distance suggests.

After breakfast, pack up camp and begin the rapid descent back down the steep forest trail. The descent takes half the time of the ascent but is notoriously tough on the knees. You will arrive back at the apple orchards of Shanag village by early afternoon, where a vehicle will transfer you back to your hotel in Manali.
Key Landmarks
Crossing the high-altitude pass bridges two distinct watershed systems, shifting the expedition over the glaciated divide and down into a new river basin.
Add a day at base camp to explore further along the unnamed ridges towards the base of Hanuman Tibba.
