The Experience

Introduction

The Kinnaur Kailash Trek climbs steeply from Tangling village through forests, rocky slopes, and high-altitude terrain to the revered Kinnaur Kailash Shivling at approximately 15,750 ft. Worshipped by both Hindus and Buddhists, the towering natural rock formation is one of the region's most important pilgrimage sites.

Along the ascent, trekkers pass landmarks such as Ganesh Park and Parvati Kund before tackling the demanding final climb to the sacred pinnacle. The combination of sustained elevation gain, rugged terrain, and rapidly changing weather makes the trek physically demanding despite its relatively short distance.

Suitable for experienced trekkers and fit pilgrims, Kinnaur Kailash offers a remarkable blend of spirituality, mountain adventure, and spectacular views across the Kinnaur Himalayas.

When is the official yatra season?

The official yatra usually runs for 2-3 weeks in August, managed by the Kinnaur District Administration. Outside this window, the trek is highly dangerous due to weather.

Is registration mandatory?

Yes, online/offline registration and a medical fitness certificate from a government doctor are mandatory to cross the Tangling checkpost.

Where is the base village?

What is the mystery of the Shivling?

The 79-foot monolith is famous for changing colors as the sun moves — appearing yellow, red, and black at different times of the day.

Is there any accommodation on the trail?
