Kinnaur Kailash at 18,500 ft is one of the most sacred and extreme treks in the Indian Himalayas — a gruelling pilgrimage to the base of the 79-ft Shivling rock formation that is revered as a manifestation of Lord Shiva. This 5-day very difficult trek involves near-vertical rock scrambles, loose scree slopes, and extreme altitude. The Kinnaur Kailash Parikrama is a spiritual and physical test that only the fittest and most devoted pilgrims undertake. Not for the faint-hearted.

How difficult is the Kinnaur Kailash trek?
It is rated as Hard to Extreme. The trek involves a massive altitude gain of nearly 8,000 ft in just two days, with very steep gradients and boulder-crossing sections.
When is the official yatra season?
The official yatra usually runs for 2-3 weeks in August, managed by the Kinnaur District Administration. Outside this window, the trek is highly dangerous due to weather.
Is registration mandatory?
Yes, online/offline registration and a medical fitness certificate from a government doctor are mandatory to cross the Tangling checkpost.
Where is the base village?
The trek starts from Tangling village, which is reached by a river-crossing (jhula) or a bridge near Powari/Reckong Peo.
What is the mystery of the Shivling?
The 79-foot monolith is famous for changing colors as the sun moves — appearing yellow, red, and black at different times of the day.
