The Gunas Pass (approximately 15,800 ft) is one of the traditional high passes connecting the Shimla hills district with the Kinnaur valley — an ancient trade corridor that connected the apple-growing, herding communities of the inner Shimla hills with the Kinnauri cultural zone. It is less famous than the Borasu or Rupin passes but represents an equally authentic trans-ridge experience in a less-trafficked corridor that sees few outsider trekkers. The approach from the Rampur/Sarahan side (Sutlej valley) climbs through the extraordinary forests of the Shimla district's upper ridges — forests that include some of the finest stands of Himalayan cedar (deodar) in India, before transitioning to the raw high-altitude grassland and ultimately the boulder-and-glacier environment of the pass corridor.
