The trek starts by following the Sissu Nallah upstream. You will immediately face a steep ascent out of the village to enter the hanging valley. The trail involves crossing multiple glacial streams; one major crossing requires linking arms or using a fixed rope. The base camp is a flat meadow used by local Gaddi shepherds.
Key Landmarks
Staying At
The environment transitions into open alpine meadows. The route follows the river valley.
Field Notes
KEY ACTIONRiver Crossings
Plan to cross early in the day before snowmelt swells the water levels. Unclip backpack waist belts before crossing.
Use Trekking Poles
Trekking poles are highly recommended to save your knees on the descent.

Today's Objective
Start early. The trail disappears entirely. You must navigate across a vast, chaotic field of massive granite boulders and loose scree left by the retreating glacier. The final ridge climb reveals Ghepan Ghat—a shocking, neon-blue lake floating amidst the grey rock and white ice. Spend an hour here before returning to base camp.
Key Landmarks
Staying At
The valley transitions into a glacial basin. The route ascends to an exposed ridge line.
Field Notes
KEY ACTIONHelmet Mandatory
Helmet mandatory. Move quickly and quietly through the rockfall zone without stopping to rest.
Stow Poles
Requires hands-on rock scrambling. Stow trekking poles to free up your hands.
INFOSlower Progress
Progress will be significantly slower and more taxing on your ankles than trail distance suggests.

A fast descent back down the valley. Cross the rivers early in the morning when the water levels are lowest. Upon reaching Sissu, grab a hot meal and board your vehicle for the quick drive through the Atal Tunnel back to Manali.
Key Landmarks
The high alpine meadows narrow into forested river terraces as tree line vegetation reappears in the lower mountain river corridor.
Elite alpine teams sometimes traverse the high ridges from Ghepan Ghat across to the Spiti valley to reach Chandra Taal. This is a technical mountaineering expedition.
