The Ghepan Ghat Lake Trek (also known as Ghepan Tso or Aliyas Lake) is a short but demanding high-altitude trek in Himachal Pradesh's Lahaul Valley. Climbing to the striking turquoise waters of Ghepan Ghat Lake at 13,580 ft, the route involves steep ascents, rocky terrain, stream crossings, and glacial landscapes. It is ideal for experienced trekkers seeking a rewarding alpine objective over a long weekend.
Trek Highlights
Ghepan Ghat Lake
An impossibly bright, neon-blue glacial lake surrounded by stark granite and ice, sitting at 13,580 ft.
Ghepan Glacier
The massive, jagged ice wall plunging directly into the far end of the lake.
Sissu Waterfall
A towering, dramatic waterfall easily visible from the village, serving as a perfect acclimatization hike.
No. Despite being short (3-4 days), it is intense. The trail is unmarked, requires navigating massive boulders, and involves crossing freezing glacial streams. It is best suited for fit trekkers with prior Himalayan experience.
Can I do this over a weekend from Delhi/Chandigarh?
It is very popular as an extended weekend trek. If you drive overnight to Manali, cross the Atal Tunnel to Sissu on Day 1, you can complete the trek and be back in Manali by Day 4 afternoon.
Do I need a guide?
Yes. The trail is frequently washed out, completely unmarked, and involves traversing deceptive moraine fields. A local guide from Sissu is crucial to avoid getting lost or trapped by rising river levels.
Is there a risk of AMS given the short duration?
Yes, a high risk. Because the approach is so fast, you jump from Manali (6,700 ft) to Sissu (10,000 ft) and then sleep at Base Camp (12,500 ft) in just two days. You must actively monitor for AMS symptoms.
Are there any tea houses on the trail?
No. Once you leave the roadhead at Sissu, there is zero infrastructure. You must carry all camping equipment and food.
Is it safe to swim in the lake?
Absolutely not. The lake is fed directly by the Ghepan glacier, and the water is near freezing. Furthermore, it is a sacred lake to the locals; entering the water is highly disrespectful.
What is the trail condition?
The initial valley walk is pleasant, but the final 4-5 km to the lake is entirely over massive, unstable boulders and loose scree.
Will my phone work?
You will have good network in Sissu (Jio/BSNL/Airtel). Once you enter the Ghepan valley and cross the first ridge, you will lose all connectivity.
