Difficulty & Readiness Guide
Short, fast, and brutal. The trek requires crossing freezing glacial streams and navigating a massive, ankle-breaking boulder field to reach the lake.
The Question
Preparation Required
Intermediate
Prior Experience
Recommended: 1-2 easy Himalayan treks or regular hiking experience.
Highly technical trek requiring physical and mental preparation.
Route Knowledge
Fast-paced or high-mileage route demanding excellent cardiovascular fitness across a pass-crossing route featuring river crossings and scrambling and loose moraine.
Physiological Demand
Challenging daily distances and steady climbs. Good cardiovascular fitness is required.
Below the major effects of altitude sickness. Air remains relatively dense.
Well-defined, stable trails with no technical maneuvers required.
Comfortable pacing with good recovery options.
Rolling or gradual terrain with minimal harsh impact on joints.
The trail radically changes from soft alpine grass at Base Camp to a brutal, unmarked labyrinth of massive boulders for the final 5 km to the lake.
It is not a steep climb, but it is highly technical due to the boulder hopping. You must use your hands constantly to balance.
The descent from the lake back to base camp is slow because you cannot rush across the unstable moraine.
Very aggressive. You go from sea level (if traveling from Delhi) to 10,000 ft in 24 hours, and hit 13,580 ft 48 hours later. AMS is a real threat.

Solo Female Travelers
Must join a group. The physical risks of river crossings and boulder fields mandate teamwork.
Hazard Profile
Most injuries and failures on this trail can be avoided by making smarter decisions early on.
Wearing trail running shoes. The sharp granite boulders will shred them, and they offer zero ankle support.
Crossing the rivers in the late afternoon when glacial melt is at its peak.
Attempting the route without a guide; the boulder field is a maze, and it is very easy to get stranded.
Hypothermia from falling during river crossings
Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) due to rapid elevation gain from Manali
Ankle fractures in the boulder fields
AMS (Altitude Sickness)
The speed of this trek is its biggest danger. If you feel dizzy or nauseous at Base Camp, DO NOT attempt the boulder hop to the lake. Descend immediately to Sissu.
Evacuation Route
Ground evacuation back to Sissu takes 4-5 hours from Base Camp. From Sissu, Manali hospitals are just a 90-minute drive away via the Atal Tunnel.
Solo Trekking
Not recommended. The river crossing is highly dangerous for a single person, and the lack of a marked trail makes getting lost highly probable.
Common Trail Ailments
๐ฅ Nearest ICU: Manali / Kullu (1.5 - 3 hours)
> Sissu is very close to the Atal Tunnel, making medical access unusually fast for a high-altitude trek.
