Difficulty & Readiness Guide
Difficult. A serious high-altitude crossover. The massive 7,000 ft descent from the pass requires rigid boots, trekking poles, and excellent physical conditioning.
The Question
Preparation Required
Intermediate
Prior Experience
Recommended: 1-2 easy Himalayan treks or regular hiking experience.
Highly technical trek requiring physical and mental preparation.
Route Knowledge
Sustained multi-day trek requiring high cumulative endurance across consecutive days across a pass-crossing route featuring loose moraine.
Physiological Demand
Multi-day camping requiring mental toughness to handle weather and fatigue debt.
Challenging daily distances and steady climbs. Good cardiovascular fitness is required.
Notable elevation gains and losses requiring good leg strength and joint resilience.
Significant time spent above 12,000ft. Expect shortness of breath and slower pacing.
Well-defined, stable trails with no technical maneuvers required.
A massive variety. You walk on soft pine needles, exposed grassy ridges, loose scree, and hard snow/ice at the pass.
The Fachu Kandi pass crossing is aggressive. The ascent from Saru Tal is steep, but the descent into the Yamuna valley is notorious for its ankle-breaking loose rocks.
You drop over 7,000 ft in two days (Day 7 and Day 8). Trekking poles and good technique are absolutely mandatory to survive this without severe knee pain.
Aggressive. You spend two nights above 12,000 ft. Proper hydration and monitoring for AMS are critical.

Hazard Profile
Most injuries and failures on this trail can be avoided by making smarter decisions early on.
Bringing soft, low-ankle hiking shoes. The descent from the pass requires rigid boots for edging into the scree.
Skipping the acclimatization at Pushtara and Rateri. The jump to 13,780 ft at Saru Tal is a massive physiological stress.
Not packing microspikes. Even in June, the northern shadow of the pass holds hard, slippery ice.
Severe AMS at Saru Tal (13,780 ft)
Slipping on the near-vertical scree descent from Fachu Kandi pass
Hypothermia at the high camps
AMS (Altitude Sickness)
High risk. You sleep at almost 14,000 ft before crossing the pass. Your operator MUST carry emergency oxygen.
Evacuation Route
If injured before the pass, mules can carry you back to Sankri (2-3 days). If injured on or after the pass, you must be evacuated down the steep scree to Hanuman Chatti.
Solo Trekking
Absolutely prohibited. The trail over the pass is an unmarked scree and snow field that is impossible to navigate safely without an experienced local guide.
