Essential Planning Guide
Vibe & Scenery
Churdhar Peak is both the highest mountain in the outer Himalayas of Himachal Pradesh and one of the state's most revered pilgrimage destinations. Rising to 11,965 ft, the summit is closely associated with Shirgul Maharaj and is marked by an ancient temple alongside a towering statue of Lord Shiva.
Most trekkers approach the peak from Nohradhar, following a long but well-defined trail through dense deodar forests, rhododendron groves, and open alpine meadows. As the tree line ends, expansive views begin to stretch across the Shivalik Hills and, on clear days, towards the Greater Himalayan ranges including Kinner Kailash and parts of the Garhwal Himalaya.
Although Churdhar attracts pilgrims throughout the year, the climb should not be underestimated. Its sustained ascent, rapidly changing mountain weather, and exposed summit sections demand good physical fitness. The combination of religious significance, accessible altitude, and outstanding summit views makes Churdhar one of North India's most rewarding weekend Himalayan treks.

Editor's Notes
3-day route reaching 11,965ft. Covers 36.0km of varied terrain.
→ See full itinerary with altitude profileRated moderate. A well-marked dirt trail through forests, transitioning to a highly exposed, windy ridge walk after Teesri. The final 1 km to the Shiva statue is a scramble over massive granite boulders.
→ See difficulty breakdown and fitness guidePackages range from ₹4,500 – ₹7,000. Inclusions and hidden costs vary by operator tier.
→ See full cost breakdownIt is graded as Moderate. While there are no extreme technical sections in the summer, the sheer distance (18 km one way) and an altitude gain of over 5,000 feet make it a heavy endurance test.
The peak receives massive snowfall (often 10+ feet) between December and March. The temple closes, and the trail from Teesri onwards becomes highly dangerous. It is not recommended without specialized winter mountaineering gear.
There is a Dharamshala near the Shirgul Maharaj temple (just below the summit), but it gets extremely crowded with pilgrims in summer and offers only basic floor sleeping. We highly recommend camping at Jamnala or Teesri instead.
During the monsoon (July-August), the lower forest sections from Nohradhar are notoriously infested with leeches and mud.
Airtel and Jio work reasonably well at Nohradhar. You will lose network in the forest, but surprisingly, you often catch a 4G signal at the actual summit.
Solan or Rajgarh. Do not rely on finding a working ATM in Nohradhar. Carry sufficient cash for the entire trip.
Fit beginners can do it if they break the ascent over two days (camping at Jamnala). Doing it in a single day is exhausting and highly discouraged for first-timers.
The trail is well-trodden and generally easy to follow up to Teesri. However, a guide is highly recommended to arrange camping logistics, avoid the pilgrim crowds, and ensure safety on the final rocky push.
