Difficulty & Readiness Guide
A demanding moderate trek. The 18 km continuous ascent requires significant cardiovascular endurance and strong joints for the descent.
The Question
Preparation Required
Intermediate
Prior Experience
Recommended: 1-2 easy Himalayan treks or regular hiking experience.
Highly technical trek requiring physical and mental preparation.
Route Knowledge
High-impact route characterised by steep gradients and heavy joint loading across a trek featuring loose moraine.
Physiological Demand
Steep, punishing ascents and descents that will heavily tax your knees, ankles, and overall joint stability.
Expect long, exhausting days of sustained climbing at high intensity. Your cardiovascular system will be pushed to its absolute limit.
Well-defined, stable trails with no technical maneuvers required.
Comfortable pacing with good recovery options.
Below the major effects of altitude sickness. Air remains relatively dense.
A well-marked dirt trail through forests, transitioning to a highly exposed, windy ridge walk after Teesri. The final 1 km to the Shiva statue is a scramble over massive granite boulders.
The 20km round trip from Jamnala is a test of sheer endurance. The wind chill at the summit can drop perceived temperatures to near freezing even in October.
Descending 18 km from the summit back to Nohradhar (if done in one day) is notorious for causing severe knee pain. We split the descent to save your joints.
The ascent from 7,000 ft to nearly 12,000 ft is significant. Mild headaches are common at the summit. Keep hydrating.

Hazard Profile
Most injuries and failures on this trail can be avoided by making smarter decisions early on.
Wearing casual sports shoes instead of trekking boots (the boulder section will destroy soft shoes).
Attempting the summit push without carrying a windproof jacket.
Relying on the Dharamshala for blankets in peak season (they run out fast).
Hypothermia from sweat cooling rapidly in high summit winds
Knee and ankle injuries on the boulder descent
Lightning strikes on the exposed ridge near the statue
AMS (Altitude Sickness)
Mild AMS is possible since you jump to 11,965 ft rapidly. Hydration is the primary defense.
Evacuation Route
Human or mule carry down the trail to Nohradhar. From Nohradhar, a 1-hour drive to Rajgarh Hospital.
Solo Trekking
Possible for highly experienced trekkers due to the well-marked trail, but not recommended due to unpredictable weather and sudden fog.
