Terrain Breakdown

The trail to Deoriatal and Tungnath is well-maintained and mostly paved with stone steps. The long walk through Rohini Bugyal involves narrow forest trails with some roots. The final climb to Chandrashila Top is steep on rocky terrain.

Summit Day Notes

3km uphill from Chopta to Tungnath (gradual steps), 1km steep climb from Tungnath to Chandrashila (rocky).

The Descent

Fast descent. 4km from summit back to Chopta. Use poles as the stone steps are hard on the knees.

Preparation

Very basic. If you can walk 5km on a flat road in 60 mins, you can do this trek. Stair climbing helps for the Tungnath steps.

Missing the sunrise — the clouds usually move in by 10 AM. Start trekking by 4 AM.

Not spending enough time at Deoriatal — the lake is most beautiful at 6 AM for reflections.
