Highly technical trek requiring physical and mental preparation.
Route Knowledge
High-impact route characterised by steep gradients and heavy joint loading across a trek featuring loose moraine.
Physiological Demand
Steep, punishing ascents and descents that will heavily tax your knees, ankles, and overall joint stability.
Challenging daily distances and steady climbs. Good cardiovascular fitness is required.
Comfortable pacing with good recovery options.
Below the major effects of altitude sickness. Air remains relatively dense.
Well-defined, stable trails with no technical maneuvers required.
The trail to Deoriatal and Tungnath is well-maintained and mostly paved with stone steps. The long walk through Rohini Bugyal involves narrow forest trails with some roots. The final climb to Chandrashila Top is steep on rocky terrain.
3km uphill from Chopta to Tungnath (gradual steps), 1km steep climb from Tungnath to Chandrashila (rocky).
Fast descent. 4km from summit back to Chopta. Use poles as the stone steps are hard on the knees.
Smooth gain. Sari (6,550) to Chopta (8,790) to Summit (13,100). Very standard acclimatisation curve.

Underestimating the peak wind โ Chandrashila is a lone peak, wind-chill can be brutal.
Assuming the stone steps make it 'easy' โ it's still a 4,300ft vertical push in one day.
Not carrying basic meds โ the drive to Sari involves many hairpins, motion sickness is common.
Slippery stone steps in winter/monsoon
Dehydration on the summit ridge
Motion sickness on the Rishikesh-Sari drive
