Seasonal Verdict

When should you go?

A spectacular high-altitude desert trek in the Lahaul and Spiti district, connecting the Baralacha La pass to the turquoise Chandratal lake. Lying almost entirely in the Himalayan rain shadow, this route bypasses the monsoon but is only accessible during a very brief summer window before snow blocks the Manali-Leh highway.

Editor's Insight

The Chandra Tal turns its most intense turquoise-blue in August when the summer light angle is optimal. By September, the color is still extraordinary but the shepherds are beginning their descent and the meadows lose their deep green. August is the synthesis moment.
