Homestay or tent at Rajgundha. Technical: Drive or walk from Bir to Billing (45 mins). Trek from Billing to Rajgundha is a steep climb through dense forest. Rajgundha is a tiny Gaddi village in a hidden valley — no road access. Landscape: Rajgundha is called 'The Hidden Paradise'. It's a bowl-shaped valley surrounded by Dhauladhar peaks, inhabited by Gaddi shepherds who live off wheat, barley, and apple orchards. Time moves differently here.
Key Landmarks
Staying At
Cold, windswept camp. Summit briefing. Technical: The steepest day. You gain 4,300ft. Above the tree line, the trail is on scree and moraine. The base camp is exposed and windy. Safety: Critical AMS zone. 12,500ft. Oximeter check. Hydrate aggressively.
Key Landmarks
Staying At
Arrive at Bara Bhangal by evening. The most remote village in HP. Technical: Start at 4 AM. Snow field ascent to the pass. The pass crest is the watershed divide between the Ravi and Beas rivers — one of the great geographical boundaries of the Himalayas. Descent is steep and long — 6,000 ft drop to Bara Bhangal. Landscape: Standing at Thamsar Pass, you stand on the spine between two great river systems. Water falling on one side ends up in the Ravi (which flows through Chamba to Pakistan). Water on the other side feeds the Beas (which flows through Kullu to Punjab). You are at the hydrological heart of the western Himalayas. Safety: Turnback time: 10 AM. The Thamsar descent is relentless — 6,000ft drop tests the knees. Use poles aggressively.
Key Landmarks
Staying At
Explore the village. Meet the families. The village has a unique culture — they celebrate the Dussehra festival differently from the rest of India, with ancient rituals specific to the valley. No mobile signal. No internet. Just mountains and people.
Riverside camp. Technical: Following the river downstream. Multiple stream crossings (bridged). Trail is narrow and overgrown in places. We are heading towards the Kullu Valley.
Key Landmarks
Staying At
Drive to Manali or Kullu. Technical: Long forest descent. Trail improves as you approach the road. First mobile signal in 5 days feels surreal.
Key Landmarks
Trek concludes. 7 days of complete wilderness.
Cross the high-altitude Kalihani glacier for a complete traverse from Bir into the Manali valley.
