Vibe & Scenery

The Experience

Introduction

Located in the beautiful Johar Valley near Munsiyari, the Bankatiya Base Camp Trek offers an uncrowded journey into one of Kumaon's most scenic mountain landscapes. Beginning from the village of Laspa, the trail climbs through oak and rhododendron forests before reaching broad alpine meadows overlooking Nanda Devi East, Rajrambha, and surrounding Himalayan peaks.

Unlike the more popular Panchachuli viewpoints around Munsiyari, Bankatiya remains relatively unknown, making it an excellent choice for trekkers seeking solitude and traditional Kumaoni mountain culture. Moderate distances and rewarding scenery make it suitable for trekkers with reasonable fitness who prefer quieter Himalayan experiences.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Bankatiya Base Camp Trek suitable for beginners?

Yes. It is rated as Moderate. The trekking distance is relatively short (around 12-16 km round trip), making it an excellent introduction to high-altitude Himalayan trekking for fit beginners.

How does this compare to the Khaliya Top trek in Munsiyari?

Khaliya Top is the most commercialized trek in Munsiyari and can be very crowded. Bankatiya is completely off the radar, offering a much more authentic, isolated wilderness experience with arguably better views of the Johar valley.

Will there be snow on the trail?

If you trek in May or early June, you will encounter residual snow patches near the base camp. By September and October, the trail is completely dry.

Is there mobile network on the trail?

You will have decent network (Jio/Airtel) in Munsiyari. Once you drive towards Laspa village, the network becomes highly erratic. Assume a total digital detox during the trekking days.

Do I need to carry camping gear?

Usually, no. Most itineraries utilize homestays in Laspa village, turning the climb to Bankatiya Base Camp into a long, strenuous day hike. If you choose to camp at Bankatiya, your operator will provide the gear.

What peaks are visible from the top?

You get a sprawling amphitheater view featuring Nanda Devi East, Rajrambha, Hardeol, and the iconic five peaks of the Panchachuli massif.

Are there leeches on the trail?

If you trek right after the monsoon in early September, the oak forests lower down can have leeches. Wearing full pants and high socks is recommended.

Is it safe for solo female trekkers?

The Kumaon region is generally very safe, but because this trail is highly secluded and unmarked, you must hire a local guide from Munsiyari. Do not attempt to navigate the forest alone.
