Essential Planning Guide
Vibe & Scenery
Among the most isolated expeditions in the Western Himalayas, the Killar–Zanskar traverse follows the historic Chari Jote Pass at approximately 17,200 ft, crossing from Himachal Pradesh's rugged Pangi Valley into the stark high-altitude deserts of Zanskar.
For centuries, traders and local communities used this demanding route to exchange salt, wool, grain, and livestock between two distinct Himalayan civilizations. The expedition passes through deep gorges, remote mountain settlements, expansive glaciers, and vast alpine basins before emerging into the dramatic monasteries and barren landscapes that define Zanskar.
Requiring complete self-sufficiency, strong expedition experience, and the ability to operate for extended periods in extremely remote terrain, the Killar–Zanskar Chari Jote Expedition represents one of India's last great wilderness traverses.

Editor's Notes
An experienced Pangi valley guide will tell you that the Chari Jote route was so well-traveled as a trade route that the stone trail markers are still partly visible near the pass col — cairns built over generations by Zanskar traders to mark the safe line in fog and snow.
10-day route reaching 16,998ft. Covers 90km of varied terrain.
→ See full itinerary with altitude profileRated challenging. Mix of rugged trans-Himalayan trails, moraine, glacial zones, and steep rocky slopes connecting green valleys to the high-altitude Zanskar desert.

→ See full cost breakdownIt is classified as a hard trek. It takes 10 days and reaches a maximum altitude of 16700 ft. Trekkers should have steady cardiovascular endurance.
Since the trail climbs up to 16700 ft, there is a distinct risk of AMS. Proper hydration, progressive pacing, and gradual acclimatization are highly advised.
August only. The Sach Pass road to Pangi opens by late June but the Chari Jote glacier is only reliably stable in August before autumn snow begins in September.
Connectivity is highly sporadic. The last reliable mobile signal is at Killar (start). Padum has limited BSNL at finish.. Expect complete digital isolation on the trail.
The last active ATM is located at Chamba (Killar side) / Kargil or Leh (Zanskar side). It is strongly recommended to withdraw sufficient cash at major transit hubs before starting.
Fresh stream water is abundant, but water treatment is mandatory. Pump filter mandatory for all 10 days. Glacial and river water quality varies significantly.
Rental options at Killar, Pangi Valley (start) / Padum, Zanskar (finish) are extremely limited. It is best to rent or purchase all essential gear in major hubs before reaching the base.
Indian nationals: No special permit for Pangi or Zanskar as of 2025. Foreign nationals: Monitor Protected Area Permit status for Zanskar border areas. Register with Killar SDM and Zanskar entry checkpoint at Padum. Satellite device mandatory.
Helicopter evacuation from Pangi side is not feasible in the upper valley. From Zanskar side (Day 7 onwards), helicopter from Padum is theoretically possible in clear weather with Indian military or civilian coordination. Plan for 7-day manual evacuation in worst case. In case of extreme emergencies, helicopter evacuation can be coordinated if weather allows.
The nearest specialized ICU is Leh Military Hospital (evacuation required from Pangi side or Padum). For minor injuries, the nearest primary health center is located at Killar CHC (start) / Padum CHC (finish). Emergency: Leh military hospital via helicopter..
Do not attempt. This must be a minimum 4-person team with at least 1 person with Himalayan mountaineering certification and a professional Pangi valley guide. The local communities are exceptionally welcoming and hospitable, but having a guide is highly recommended.
Yes, foreign nationals are fully permitted with standard tourist permits and passport logging at regional checkpoints.
We serve highly nutritious, warm vegetarian meals suitable for high altitudes. You will also get to taste Padum guesthouse serves Zanskar-style momos and butter tea — the perfect end-expedition meal on the trail.

The Chari Jote pass is known in Zanskar Buddhist tradition as the 'Gateway of the God Kings' — the route through which an ancient Zanskar king is said to have fled to Pangi during a territorial war in the 12th century, establishing trade ties that persisted for 700 years.
