Essential Planning Guide
The Killar to Zanskar via Chari Jote is one of the most remote and demanding trans-Himalayan crossovers in the Indian Himalayan system — a 10-day expedition that carries trekkers from the Pangi valley of Chamba district (Himachal Pradesh) across the imposing Chari Jote pass at 17,200 ft into the Zanskar valley of Ladakh. This route follows an ancient trade corridor used for centuries by Zanskar-region Tibetan Buddhist traders who brought salt, dried apricots, and wool across the Himalayan divide to the Pangi markets and the Chamba kingdom beyond. The Chari Jote is not merely a pass — it is the Himalayan divide between two entirely distinct civilizations: the Pahari Hindu-influenced Pangi valley on the south face, and the Tibetan Buddhist Zanskar landscape on the north. The trek passes through some of the most geologically dramatic terrain in India — the vertical rock walls of the upper Chenab gorge, some of the largest glaciated approaches in the Western Himalayas, and an arrival in Zanskar that delivers the trekker into a moonscape of sand, stone, and ancient monasteries. This is a pure expedition — fully self-sufficient, technically demanding, and guaranteed to be one of the most profound travel experiences of a lifetime.
