Difficulty & Readiness Guide
Moderate to Difficult. The steep, rocky 1,500 ft climb from base camp to the lake over loose moraine is physically demanding and requires good balance.
The Question
Preparation Required
Intermediate
Prior Experience
Recommended: 1-2 easy Himalayan treks or regular hiking experience.
Highly technical trek requiring physical and mental preparation.
Route Knowledge
Fast-paced or high-mileage route demanding excellent cardiovascular fitness across a pass-crossing route featuring river crossings and scrambling and loose moraine.
Physiological Demand
Challenging daily distances and steady climbs. Good cardiovascular fitness is required.
Well-defined, stable trails with no technical maneuvers required.
Rolling or gradual terrain with minimal harsh impact on joints.
Comfortable pacing with good recovery options.
Below the major effects of altitude sickness. Air remains relatively dense.
The trail transitions from soft, muddy forest paths to exposed alpine grass, culminating in a harsh, loose rocky moraine approach to the lake.
The final climb to the lake is relentless. You will navigate over large boulders and loose scree. In early summer, this section will be covered in hard snow.
The descent from the lake to Kanimarg is tricky due to loose rocks. The final descent to Pahalgam on Day 3 is long but on soft forest soil.
A very safe altitude profile. You gain altitude steadily and sleep at 9,500 ft, well below the danger zone for severe AMS.

Hazard Profile
Most injuries and failures on this trail can be avoided by making smarter decisions early on.
Wearing running shoes. The moraine section will destroy soft shoes and lead to twisted ankles.
Underestimating the steepness. It is shorter than KGL, but the gradient is much sharper.
Not hiring a guide. The trail above Kanimarg splits into dozens of sheep tracks and is easy to lose in the fog.
Twisted ankles on the loose moraine rocks near the lake
Hypothermia if caught in sudden rain without waterproof gear
Minor altitude sickness on the Day 2 climb
AMS (Altitude Sickness)
Low to moderate risk. Sleeping at 9,500 ft provides excellent acclimatization before the 12,100 ft summit push.
Evacuation Route
Evacuation is extremely fast. Mules can carry a victim from Kanimarg directly down to the Pahalgam hospital in under 3 hours.
Solo Trekking
Not recommended. While the trail to Baisaran is crowded, the upper reaches are desolate, unmarked, and prone to sudden fog.
