The Experience

Introduction

Nalgan Pass is a historic mountain crossing connecting the Pabbar Valley with the higher grazing grounds along the Shimla–Kinnaur region. The trail has long been used by shepherd communities moving livestock between seasonal alpine pastures.

Beginning from the forests around Rohru and Chirgaon, the route ascends through oak, maple, and cedar woodland before emerging into broad alpine meadows leading toward the pass. From the crest, trekkers enjoy wide views across the Pabbar Valley and the surrounding Himalayan ridges.

Far quieter than Himachal Pradesh's better-known trekking routes, Nalgan Pass offers experienced trekkers an opportunity to explore a traditional mountain corridor that remains closely connected to local pastoral life.

In late September/early October, standing at the Nalgan pass meadow while a flock of 600-800 sheep streams past — bells ringing, dogs barking, the shepherd family walking at the back — is one of those natural-human spectacles that define the Shimla hills pastoral heritage.
