The Nalgan Pass (approximately 14,900 ft) is a traditional shepherd crossing pass in the Rohru division of Shimla district — connecting the Pabbar valley system with the higher inner Shimla-Kinnaur border grasslands used by seasonal migratory herders. This is shepherd-economy trekking at its most authentic — the entire route is a functioning shepherd transit corridor, where the only other walkers on the trail are Gaddis and Kinnauri herding families moving their livestock between seasonal pastures. The forest approach from the Rohru/Chirgaon area climbs through some of the finest mixed oak, maple, and cedar woodland in the Shimla hills before emerging onto the multi-layered meadow system leading to the Nalgan pass ridge. The pass itself provides expansive views across the Pabbar valley to the south and the inner Shimla-Kinnaur transition belt to the north.
